Language on Mumsnet

Do you sometimes feel Mumsnet guilty of defamation of character or libel ? The language used to slur people under discussion is quite offensive at times. If anyone ever got to know do you think at some point one day someone will sue ?

People are not mindful or careful how they respond to an issue. People who they don't know get called all sorts. And the advice. Leave him etc.

So - you think Anonymous Poster A should could be sued for advising Anonymous Poster B to leave their Anonymous Abusive Partner C?

Hmm

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight …

Reading with intrigue

Bideshi - yes sorry, Orlando Figes. He must have felt a right idiot when he was exposed as his behaviour was very petty.

tobee · 25/02/2023 19:32

I'm assuming Mumsnet has lawyers?

This site is fairly tame in comparison with plenty of other sites. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the internet/forums/social media etc in the decades to come regarding this issue. Internet is still in its infancy which is easy to forget

No. Absolutely not.

  1. Alluding to someone is just not going to meet the threshold for defamation no matter how outing it is.
  2. Mumsnet would remove a post immediately if requested to.
  3. Users are near impossible to trace and prove who posted.
  4. Too few people use MN or give a fuck about it to significantly damage someone's reputation.
  5. None of that even considers how hard a defamation case is at the best of times.

Users are near impossible to trace and prove who posted.

So how was Orlando Figes found out as presumably he posted under a pseudonym?.

Errol - ok, I don’t remember that. Did she threaten to Sue mumsnet?

Well she could afFORD it

Mumsnet doesn't officially publish our posts. They facilitate us to do it. This protects all social media in that they are not legally classed as publishers like newspapers, for example.
So it's all on us for any liability. Quickly taking them down actually protects us in that for us to be sued we have to have caused damage and if they are not read by more than 10 people then we haven't caused damage.
We can bé found If required in law unless you are really protecting yourself with VPNs etc. IP addresses and email accounts can be obtained quick enough in legal actions.
Expensive and risky taking liable actions and often brings more attention and ridicule than the original post. You've also got to have a rep to defend, have to prove you were damaged and have to know the person can pay up if you win. Not much on this site that warrants all that risk.

@UnJustine 🤣🤣🤣

I am almost tempted to write her full name just to see if the thread automatically implodes.
