How much would you pay for...?

A small cactus/succulent in a small glass bowl like this at a very popular church sale. Not for charity. The tables are a mix of small local businesses, crafts and people clearing their attics.

Marks do similar for about £5 I think. I'd prefer a china bowl.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/02/2023 14:53

I agree that the glass isn't great. Not my cup of tea. Speaking of I do like a small plant in a tea cup!

NEmama · 25/02/2023 14:56

£5?

rothbury · 25/02/2023 15:03

£3.50

monomatapea · 25/02/2023 15:05

I would not buy a plant in a bowl. You'll see the roots and the roots are meant to be dark.

I'd buy one in a pot for £4-5

LetThemEatTurnips · 25/02/2023 15:06

I wouldn't buy in that bowl either, would want a drainage hole and opaque pot.

Would buy for £5 if the pot was nice enough.

WaddleAway · 25/02/2023 15:07

Nothing, because plants look weird in glass bowls. You can see the soil and roots. I’d pay maybe £3 for the glass bowl on its own.

Youraccountisnolongervalid · 25/02/2023 15:09

That’s a trifle bowl isn’t it?

Poisonrunningthroughmyveins · 25/02/2023 15:09

How small is small?

I personally wouldn’t buy it at all but I can imagine them asking for £7.50 or something. Cactus compost is expensive.

FredaFox · 25/02/2023 15:11

Echo everyone else, the glass bowl is a no

Ceramic bowl I'd pay £5 for a small cactus 🌵

ChilliBandit · 25/02/2023 15:14

It’s quite an old fashioned design of bowl and cacti/succulents are trendy at the moment but in ceramic pots. Ceramic pot plus plant you will easily sell for £5 I should think.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 25/02/2023 15:16

I buy them wholesale and ones that come in a 7cm plastic lot are around £2 including VAT. Then you need to pay for your container. Which costs you probably the same again.

Then you need to make a profit, which should be at least 100% of your selling price. So £8?

The reason people buy this kind of thing for £5 from M&S / Asda etc is because they can buy hundreds of thousands of them from their wholesaler. As an independent seller it's almost impossible to make a profit at a price people are happy with because we've been so fucked over by supermarkets selling plants and flowers as loss leaders, we've lost sight of what things actually cost.

Plus factor in the MN tendency to tell you they can buy everything for £1.50 and beyond that you're being ripped off and you'll never get a realistic opinion.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 25/02/2023 15:18

Also yeah. There's a trend for plants in glass ( it is actually good for the roots) but most people don't like it as it looks ugly.

dontgobaconmyheart · 25/02/2023 15:44

Honestly, if that wasn't for charity then nothing as I probably wouldn't want to buy it. It reminds me of the bowls my lovely nan used to serve us up Angel Delight in in the 90's. Sentimental but I wouldn't want it as decor in my home. Plain glass - maybe if it styled well but I'd prefer a proper ceramic pot.

More objectively a small cactus or succulent in a proper pot 4 or £5 I suppose. I think it's one of those things where you'd get a bit more of it was at a posh hipster type of fair but at a church sale where other stalls are essentially the jumble sale I think it would be hard to command higher prices.

Porkandbeans1 · 25/02/2023 15:49

I have picked up similar in a charity shop for 50p.

GlassBunion · 25/02/2023 16:57

I wouldn't buy it as there isn't a drainage hole.

The plant would have to be placed at a low level else all you'd see is a bowl of compost and roots.
Peoples with young children would need to place it out of reach.

Whilst cut glass is a bit marmite, it looks better with light shining through it as the cuts would refract the light. Filled with compost , it would look drab.

Really sorry OP.

GlassBunion · 25/02/2023 16:58

Fill it with compost and see what you think.

Thanks everyone!
