To be slightly amused by a 22 year old updating his Facebook status as "I'm off to do my paper round"?

I've got a male fb friend who is 22 and one of his his frequent fb status update is "just off to do my paper round". This amuses my slightly - in a way I admire his lack of self consciousness about it.

Am I being too judgey?

I did a paper round when I was 21. It was extra money on top of my shop wage, I used my bike to get about and it was really good happy work in the summer months. I didn't do it in winter as I had left for another job by then, but I don't see much wrong with doing a paper round as an adult, be it as an add on for extra income or a stand alone for someone who has additional needs.

Now, how did you come to be friends with this random man?

SweetSakura · 25/02/2023 08:35

I can't see anything wrong with doing a paper round as an adult of any age. It's an honest way to earn money.

We're not friends in real life. I admit I only know him from online but now I'm limiting my Fb account and not adding any more people

I'm surprised he updates his status - not many people do.

Anyway - either it is a real paper round or its drugs

Greatly · 25/02/2023 08:47

My well off friend in her 50s has just taken on the village paper round. Bloody brilliant as she walks it and carries the papers. Basically gets paid to work out and makes her get up early!

Passivhaus · 25/02/2023 08:49

I remember feeling embarrassed at 16 that I was still doing a paper round, I shouldn't have but peer pressure and all that. Damn I loved delivering papers I'd quite like to do it now 20 years later 😅

Bayleaf25 · 25/02/2023 08:49

I don’t know any 22 year olds that use Facebook so pretty unusual however I’d also assume it was a jokey post and he was off doing something else.

MargaretThursday · 25/02/2023 09:08

I find it more odd that you have someone on fb as a friend who you don't really seem to know well.
Each to their own.

AutumnScream · 25/02/2023 09:09

I thought it was a euphemism for taking a shit. I,e taking the newspaper to the toilet.

Yeah I agree tbh - I'm not 100% happy with some of my fb friends tbh - I don't use it all that much any more but want to keep it to keep in contact with people I know well. In an ideal world I'd have built my fb account differently - but out of all my social media - fb is the medium I use least and find most boring ! But as j say - I keep it for the sake of my real friends !

Our paper is delivered by a guy in a car in his mid forties at about 6.30 in the morning. His "day job" is a window cleaner

Where we live most of the houses are really far apart. My nearest neighbour is a quarter of a mile away

I agree with others that it's more unusual for a 22 year old to be on FB

dollymixtured · 25/02/2023 09:17

My guess is drugs and it’s a way to communicate to his clients that he will be in a certain area

That was my thought.

There's no way a 22yo updates fb several times a week to tell people he's going to work - whether it's a paper round or not.

ShandaLear · 25/02/2023 04:36

Is he actually doing a paper round or is it just what he calls his real job? Either way it’s quite charming and funny. In our house we always say, “How was your day at the cheese factory?” None of us work in a cheese factory.

This. I’m a lawyer and I frequently say I’m “off down the mines”.

Yeah it's quite obvious really. Unless he also updates on his other movements

rainbowunicorn · 25/02/2023 09:25

It isn't a paper round OP. It will be drugs.
That aside It may be time for a clear out of the friends you have on social media. You don't know the person so why not just unfriend them and any others you font know.

You're not wrong in your advice but tbh my fb account is so tiny anyway! Grin

I suspect my friends husband of being a millionaire, they are certainly rolling in cash. He gets up and does his teenage son’s paper round when the teenage son is ill or otherwise indisposed.

shinynewapple22 · 25/02/2023 09:38

When we last had our local free papers delivered pre-Covid it was always by an older person (retired). I imagine in some areas there are still paper deliveries from newsagents - probably to older people who are just used to them . In this case I see no reason why the deliverer would be expected to be 15. So many people today having to take on extra work to survive . If this was the case it would be extremely bad taste to rib them .

I do wonder though - at the idea this is a euphemism - depending on the time of day he posted .

shinynewapple22 · 25/02/2023 09:42

But then again - are customers for drugs likely to be using FB?

To be honest - it could be more not like a conventional paper round - but more like someone delivering a local area newsletter

Unless hes the dude who delivers the weird conspiracy theory paper thats been arriving at my house this month 😂😂

Singleandproud · 25/02/2023 10:16

@ShandaLear and @Chickenly
In my family it's "How were the mines today?"

I work in Flood and Coastal Erosion protection and other family members work in supermarkets and schools, we also live in Norfolk and fairly sure there are no mines anywhere in the county.

I love little family sayings though.

If one of my friends is out during a week night we'll joke that it's shocking they're out on a school night. None of us are in school.
