Does putting up with a weird, sometimes unpleasant work environment for the money worth it.

I have a part time job in a successful small business. It's run on the bosses large personality and ego which can be fun but is often stressful, unpredictable and ultimately terrifying.
It's got to the stage that I dread going in and I avoid work out of hours. I literally go in for the money.
The boss lies to me about H&S and procedures which means I can't trust what he says or feel confident in decisions I make.
I like the money but we could survive without it, I'd find something probably less well paid.
I'm wondering whether life is too short to tolerate a stressful work environment or maybe I'm just to menopausal to cope with it anymore.

Life is too short.

What would you advise your dearest friend if they explained this was their situation?

ConfusedNT · 24/02/2023 21:04

Nope, in my experience you burn out and crash and then don't have the luxury of time or the headspace to find the right job

Better to look now before you get to that point

It doesn't sound like it adds anything positive to your life. I think you are delaying the inevitable - it's time to leave.

Jmaho · 24/02/2023 21:11

No way. Never. I was once in a job that I hated and it made me ill. Couldn't sleep at night due to the feeling of dread. I stayed until I was able to go on maternity leave but I have no real nice memories of that pregnancy mainly due to the job at the time.

Itssocoldtoday · 24/02/2023 23:40

It’s never worth it. I once had a job like that and it made me seriously ill. Never again.

WorkWitch · 25/02/2023 07:49

I seem to have cycled through all the emotions. Optimism, happy to be picked, determination, tact, anger, crushed.
Others have left before me. I think the bosses personality is so big and so non standard that it will always be stressful.
Simple things like UK law says PpE has to be provided were greeted with a massive stressful rant about staff gossiping and misuse of company property.
It leaks into my head outside of work and makes me afraid to raise issues that are part of my job.

You’re using your free time and headspace to discuss the negative impact work is having on you. Get out while you’re not too worn down too. Please. It sounds bordering on abusive.

Selfesteem22 · 25/02/2023 08:02

All jobs have stressful/wierd bits but if you are dreading going in it's got past that point. Look for something else!

kissthegirlshesnotbehindthedoor · 25/02/2023 08:19

How much are you getting on a part time wage tht makes this worth it? That would influence my decision...

QuitChewingMyPlectrum · 25/02/2023 08:21

Never worth a negative impact on mental health - the highs and lows thing could lead to burnout. I worked in an environment v like this for 15 years. It wasn't worth it in the end.....
I would echo the PP who said what advice would you give to a friend. Be as kind to you as you would have been to them.

growinggreyer · 25/02/2023 08:27

The boss lies to me about H&S and procedures which means I can't trust what he says or feel confident in decisions I make.

This bit stood out to me. Don't forget that you have legal responsibilities. Even if you are not the boss you need to feel safe in the things you do at work.

TrevorOptions · 25/02/2023 08:30

Def leave ! Are you doing CV and maybe taking on new stuff to add to your CV?

that way you have a plan and when the boss is being a arse you can just think ‘la la lar I am outta here soon’.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 25/02/2023 08:32

IME never. I tried pushing on through for the money; I ended up off sick with work-related stress for months, from the morning I burst into tears trying to decide what to have for breakfast.

The menopause can erode your confidence when you’re in a great, well-supported job; you don’t need this arsehole of a weathervane boss helping to do it even faster. Get out while you still have enough of yourself to put together some decent application forms for something else.

GroggyLegs · 25/02/2023 09:01

It's not just your mental health that you are risking, it's your physical health too if he won't provide PPE.

No job is worth that.
