How do I say thank you for this?

Apologies for the very low-drama post. Because of my upbringing, I struggle to judge these things so apologies if this is obvious. I'm a bit of a people pleaser so I often struggle to know when to thank people or how to thank people - on one hand, I sometimes over-thank people because I'm a people pleaser. On the other hand, I sometimes under-thank people because I would have instinctively done the same as they have so don't realise how much of a favour it was.

Anyway, we moved into our new house about six months ago. There's a lovely couple across the street in their late 50s/early 60s who we've spoken to a few times outside our homes. Today, I had a delivery that I can't bring inside but DH will bring it in when he's home from work - it was building materials and a kerbside delivery. The weather said we weren't due to get rain so DH said it'd be fine on the driveway. It was delivered this morning and a couple of hours later DDog was barking during a Teams meeting and I saw my neighbour on my driveway, in the unexpected rain (bloody weather app lied) covering my delivery with a tarp and tying it down. I popped outside and thanked him at the time.

I obviously need to return his tarp and rope when DH brings the stuff in. Should I get him a beer or a card or something else? Is that overboard?

This possibly the most non-issue I have ever read on mumsnet.
OP - you honestly need to relax!

Crazykefir · 24/02/2023 17:34

Yes. Just say thank you and offer to return tbe faviour if needed.

ILiveAt64ZooLane · 24/02/2023 17:42

So OP I don’t think we’ve helped. You have
1 x alcohol
6 x thanks/return favour
1 x card & invite round
5 x food
1 x Christmas gift
3 x flowers

what are you going to do?

newwings · 24/02/2023 23:32

A thank you card and something baked with love.

My neighbour dropped round a box of shortbread biscuits as a thank you for a tiny favour. I really appreciated them. Something simple is best.

My neighbour helped me, unasked, with a small diy job that I couldn’t have fixed on my own because it needed two people. I took him round a bottle of wine.

That’s really kind of him. Yes in this situation I would pop over with a small gift and thank him in person - beers or bottle of wine.

Yes me too. What lovely people.

ILiveAt64ZooLane · 25/02/2023 17:28

Well if you haven’t returned it yet you will need to get something as an apology rather than a thank you.

Gwen82 · 26/02/2023 12:10

What did you do op?
