Social story lessons- identity

So my AIBU is really on behalf of my DS

He is in year 11 so GCSE year, they have weekly social story lessons.

Covering a wide range of interesting topics.

My DC has come home tonight complaining...

This weeks topic focused on Identity, mainly on cat gender ( not sure if this is the exact terminology), reason being someone in his year identifies as a female cat. The session is a place where discussions can happens.

So DC said that teacher has spoken about a huge list of genders and how student should respect all other pupils and how they identify.. completely agree

My DC then questioned me at home and said "having so many genders will have an impact on children who may be confused about gender. And that my DC doesn't think we should normalise ( identifying as a cat) this. Where does it stop? He said he respects anyones rights and isn't actually bothered if someone wanted to identify as a frog but feels teaching about it in school isn't the right thing to do. Just teaching about respect in general is enough."

They are continuing the session topic next week.. My DC doesn't want to join in as he feels it's a waste of his time and would prefer to focus on his GCSE subjects

What would you do in this situation?

Congratulate him on his ability to think critically and logically, pat myself on the back for raising a child who doesn't just blindly follow the trends in society.

Unless it's actually possible to be excused from the class he will probably need to do it but he doesn't need to agree with the content.

Cat Gender FFS! I get that this is just the current thing, like we had lots of goths (me) and Emo kids when I was in 6th form but we didn't have to waste school time having lessons about how to respect goths.

Thank you, I agree I'm happy he has his own mind and challenges things in such a grown up way( I was surprised).

I have explained to him that sometimes in life we have to take part in things that we don't particularly want too. It's life...

I'm worried if I message the teacher to ask if he can be excused, it will be taken the wrong way.
