To think a lot of the Uk looks like a state

Not sure if I am being dramatic or if years of austerity are really starting to show…? Lately I’ve really started to notice how filthy, run down and falling apart everywhere looks! I live in a town in the south east on the borders of the M25. Every where there are gapping pot holes (can hardly avoid the volume there are now and genuinely concerned I will lose a wheel at some point!), broken lamp posts, the volume of litter / filth on the roads seems very high and can’t remember the last time I saw a road sweeper, and things like pathways are a state, road markings worn out, SO many closed/dilapidated shops….the town just looks awful as do many of the nearby towns! Is it just the South East looking like this? Aibu?! Or have I watched too much Selling Sunsets and setting my expectations too high…???

Is it Hastings because you literally have to skirt the potholes on every street here! It’s become horrendous lately. Our council need a serious look at themselves!

you’re not being unreasonable and when you go abroad and walk down beautiful clean streets and see smooth pothole free roads you have to wonder where all the tax we pay is going.

PermanentlyinUAT · 24/02/2023 18:39

Walking around lots of areas in London over the last few days - Wimbledon Village, Kings Road, Knightsbridge, they all looked lovely to me and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. So maybe it's on a borough by borough basis.

Noolablue10 · 24/02/2023 18:40

Maidenhead is filthy and full of potholes and empty shops.

BouleBaker · 24/02/2023 18:41

It's really bad where I am. But there just is no money. It's all been spaffed up the wall on Test and Trace and tax cuts for corporations. That bill has to be paid. There's no foreign investment now and now EU funds to help struggling areas. We are right royally stuffed.

Wow, the levels of bigotry and snobbishness on this thread. Just wow.

Well, not really. That's the problem with these kinds of topics, you can't raise perfectly justified opinions without someone declaring you a bigot or worse.

-Areas ARE becoming really rundown.
-Imposing grey towerblocks ARE being erected (anywhere that anyone leaves a gap for five minutes!) that do absolutely nothing for the aesthetic of an area.
-The gap between north and south IS becoming wider.
-Some people who aren't native to this country do NOT care for it as those born and bred do.
That's not being bigoted or snobby. That's just stating facts.

DocCee · 24/02/2023 18:44

I live on the east coast of Australia and overall it’s pretty good. The cost of living has certainly risen as of late (groceries, petrol, power etc) and house prices have soared.
There are also several additional costs that most don’t pay for in the UK… private health insurance premiums, fees to see the GP, paying high costs for some medicines etc. But I don’t think it’s as shabby as the North London area we used to live in now looks 😞

Appalonia · 24/02/2023 18:45

Totally agree OP. The city I live in is so ugly and the hideous student accommodation that is now every where has just added to it. Half of the city centre is just about to be ripped down to make room for more of it. It's so depressing.

I never used to agree on the immigration topic - but over the past couple of years I really feel the tide has turned and everywhere I look there are people hanging around, who have no care for this country or homes they live in and in turn the “pride” this country used to have really seems to be disappearing and is becoming a little unrecognisable in some areas. I fear it is getting to a point of no return on all aspects…!!

Really v v lame blaming immigrants for the God awful state of the UK! How are you verifying that these people “hanging around” are immigrants?? I can can hazard a guess. Agree with you that this country is in dire straits and it’s absolutely a decade plus of deliberate decline, austerity and asset stripping from the self-serving sociopaths in power! Also, people idiotically believing in the right wing, immigrant blaming bollox, from client journalists, employed by billionaire non-doms, hasn’t helped. Sounds like you’re included in that list!!

1974devon · 24/02/2023 18:46

Yep agree. South West also has terrible roads with huge.pot holes. People report to council but nothing gets done. One in middle of the town so bad people drive on other side of road to get around it. Been there for couple of months. Don't seem able to drive in a straight line these days as always swerving to avoid road damage :(

EsmeT · 24/02/2023 18:48

I am in the Midlands and was saying this earlier. It's depressing.

Going against the grain here but the U.K. is in wonderful physical and structural condition compared to most of Europe and the rest of the world.

Hmm, not sure I can agree with that. Drove 1500km across Europe in the last couple of weeks and did not witness anything like the waste strewn potholed dystopiascapes I “enjoy” in the UK. Nor did any of my rail journeys get cancelled, delayed or replaced by short trains or buses. Unlike every single time I travel Leeds - Manchester.

In my experience the UK is far faaaar worse than what I enjoy when travelling in Europe.

Basecampzero · 24/02/2023 18:49

FixundFoxi · 24/02/2023 13:45

@MarshaBradyo I'm not sore at all. Shit happens.
Nice to see you suggesting the Red wall voted to leave the EU purely due to immigration racism.
In my experience it was more nuanced (backed up by the literature). A hatred of Osborne and Cameron and their austerity politics. A kick in the teeth of the metropolitan elites who steadfastly ignored the rest of the country. Did you ever listen to Farage ? Listen to the podcasts by John Harris 'Anywhere but Westminster' pretty eye opening and tell a narrative different from yours from people in those places.
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/video/2021/jun/25/anywhere-but-westminster-10-years-in-10-minutes-video

Any case that amazing election victory is in tatters. Promises came to nothing.
Labour might not be much better but certainly cannot be any worse.

How can Brexit be explained by austerity and Cameron? If anything it puts more power in the hands of Westminster by removing EU subsidies from poorer areas of the UK and by putting more power in the hands of Westminster to reduce workers' rights. Does anyone really think Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and Jacob Rees Mogg are not part of the Metropolitan elite? Two of them went to Eton and the other to Westminster College FFS.

But I agree the promises lies made by the Tory government have not been upheld. Who is really surprised when we had BJ as PM for much of that time and he's repeatedly proven to be a liar.

LieInsAreExtinct · 24/02/2023 18:50

I can confirm that where I live is a tip. And I do mean outside.

Auckland - where the art of the ram raid has been perfected by bored teens?

My friends local dairy had a murder recently - shop worker killed for $200 cash. My mums car was stolen too and used to ram raid a liquor store.

It's very common to be burgled in Auckland. But they do have fewer potholes than round here - oh and strangely a huge amount of immigration.

Nz it is very pretty but far from paradise. I lived half my life there and experienced much more crime in nz than I have in uk.

My friend married a new Zealander, he said he would never live there again.
Back to the UK, yes I agree about the pot holes and ugly looking flats being built but I still see pretty clean villages.. What I've also noticed is parked cars everywhere. It is a real nuisance.

CUL8RAlligator · 24/02/2023 18:59

This is the Big Society that David Cameron promised and won an election on. I couldn't see the appeal personally. But voters lapped it up.

And that LHA rate is based on the average of the bottom 30% of rents in the area, so in many areas you'll be lucky to find a place that's at or below that level. In my area, the LHA rate for a two-bed property is a tad under £1k a month, but it's very hard to find a property of that for less than £1,200.

Being expected to pay only £200 per month yourself for a two bedroom property doesn't seem entirely outrageous, tbh.

It leaves you very short of money, as the benefit cap is £1,666 a month, so a family would only have £466 to live on and pay all their bills, although in most areas their council tax would be reduced by 80%.

Even an uncapped family with 2 children would only have around £850 a month to do all that.

Anyone old enough to remember the shambles that state schools, the NHS and public services were in in the mid-90s after 15 years of Tory misrule should not be surprised - it's the same thing all over again. It only takes 2 or 3 terms of Tory asset-stripping and pocket-lining for the country to degenerate into this state.

The austerity policies pursued since 2011 have led to 300,000 excess deaths. The following was said in 1946 but is just as true today: "They condemned millions of first-class people to semi-starvation. Now the Tories are pouring out money in propaganda of all sorts and are hoping by this organised sustained mass suggestion to eradicate from our minds all memory of what we went through ... If you are selling shoddy stuff you have to be a good salesman. But I warn you they have not changed, or if they have they are slightly worse than they were ... what is Toryism, except organized spivery? They wanted to let the spivs loose.”

Blair/Brown trebled NHS spending (funded by debt) in a decade. Do you seriously think that the country can afford to keep doing that? It would bankrupt the country. It's a leaky bucket and will consume everything that's thrown at it until there's some serious reorganisation and efficiency improved.

blackpearwhitelilies · 24/02/2023 17:58

It was very low down perhaps for some Leave voters. It was top priority for quite a few, as many vox pop interviews on the news have indicated.

It was last place for vast majority, about 85%. You could probably still get a vox pop out of the 3% to 5% who said it was top priority though if you edited through the answers

Bignanny30 · 24/02/2023 19:07

This country has had it !

CriticalAlert · 24/02/2023 19:07

It's a mess everywhere. The Tories have run the country to the ground and couldn't give a shit about ordinary people. Horrible nasty bastards.

Parentsofaprincess · 24/02/2023 19:08

The country is a dump for the main part. Expensive full of takers, full people who don't give a shit about anyone. If I could leave I would. Though I dont think anywhere else is any better.

Can't help but think it is a plan by the elite to run country down and get us back into Europe somehow.
Given that the civil service are all left wing loonies and remainers nothing will ever get sorted properly, just look at the immigrant debacle this week.

PillBoxes · 24/02/2023 19:08

Regarding the deterioration of the public realm in many places now, the Broken Window Theory is something for the powers that be to ponder, and fast.

Novembermummy88 · 24/02/2023 19:10

Just tried to read through some of the replies. Seems like a lot of people agree, so I’m glad I’m not going mad! It’s also good to see people ARE bothered.

With the littering I completely agree about taking the initiative and picking up litter / people not littering in the first place. BUT I think peoples attitudes towards littering are generally better than when I was younger, I would be mortified to litter now. But there will always be those that do it. And, ultimately, in my area we definitely do not have street cleaners, nor the street cleaning machines clearing up the muck at the sides of the roads any more, which are clearly needed, if only for the muck on the roads. I remember street cleaners always used to be around. I remember roads being retarmaced frequently when I was younger too - which literally never seems to happen now - it’s just patching over craters in the roads which seem to reappear weeks later.

I only responded on some of the immigration comments and it definitely wasn’t involved in my initial post. Our nhs virtually relies on immigration now for staff! Many worthwhile people moving here. However, we are all allowed an opinion, and personally I am starting to think that actually, yes, there is an increase of the volume of people here that don’t have an interest in looking after this country which MUST have an impact - for example teachers trying to manage primary school classes where 70% of children don’t speak English at home (inner London figures). However, that is only a small part to play in why things have changed. For some reason I also think many, many Brits have less interest in taking pride in this country / their homes etc. The snow prior to Christmas - myself and my elderly neighbour were the ONLY people on our street to clear the snow off of the pathway outside our house. It’s a 2 minute job! When I was younger it was standard for everyone to clear snow on the pathway outside their house which resulted in there being clear pathways the entire way down the street that weren’t too icy etc. “it’s someone else’s problem” attitude.

Definitely agree the lack of Government investment is the biggest element - if they had invested in the nhs, schools, services etc to maintain them (and to cope with increase in population) things wouldn’t have got as dilapidated as they are now. I recently had to call an ambulance for my mum who had a stroke and we waited EIGHT hours for the ambulance. I genuinely couldn’t have got her in the car to the hospital which 999 kept suggesting.

Im not sure who to vote for next time. I can’t see the wood through the trees these days. My elderly FIL used to say “tories, labour, bankers are all the same people they just wear the same hats”. I used to roll my eyes. But now I’m starting to think he is right. I’m not sure why we all just roll over and allow this to happen. The government just seem to bank roll their friends, whilst the rest of us suffer. I used to think of myself as “middle class” as we over 100k income, but in reality these days middle class is just an illusion. You are either part of the “1%” or you’re poor, not much in between anymore!!!

….I’m ranting but anyway I am just annoyed at what a mess everything is. I work hard, why should we put up with such crap services etc? Thanks for all the replies though!
