I started a new job 7 months ago. I've worked in this field for 11 years now. I was excited to start my new role. However my colleagues have not been welcoming. In fact I've been given the silent treatment because of gossiping between themselves. So for example it was said I did something that I absolutely had not done. I've now made a working relationship with some other new starters who have since made best friends with each other and have been taking the mick out of me. avoiding me. talking over me. I know im not there to make friends but just to have a bit of a chat when i eat my sandwich is all im looking for. The shifts have been made shorter so im losing hours even tho they don't have enough staff lots of pressure to work your days off. I should leave shouldn't I

Yep.. I had a job like this. Great on paper, and if my work colleagues hadn't been such a bunch of snidey back stabbing arseholes I'd have stayed forever. They made it impossible though. All Been there for 15 years+ and bitterly resented newcomers. Very sad really, because I could have made a real difference there.

I had no idea care homes were toxic workplaces. Why is that?

Often because people are working under pressure and everyone has to pull their weight. If you're perceived as not doing that you can come under attack. Everyone is hyper critical of colleagues and personalities often clash. There's always one or two staff who are unpleasant personalities and like to shit stir. Staff are often tired or perhaps have chronic health conditions and they're low paid so are often miserable and resentful of their situation.

They're often not happy places to work in. The best ones are well staffed with supportive management and decent equipment and a pleasant working environment, but a lot don't have these things.

Interesting but my colleagues are the ones sitting in the break room while I run round like a headless chicken. But woo betide me if I need something to eat or drink
