Unused lateral flow kits

I have an abundance of unused LFT. I want to give them away. Either back to the NHS or to someone who will actually use them. AIBU? Is there any such place to dispose of them without waste? Bet lots of people are in a similar position. Thought I’d better stock up before having to pay and now not needing to use them. They expire in December.

We had to throw a load away because the juice had evaporated.

cloudglazer · 23/02/2023 13:12

We had covid last couple of weeks and DD wasn't allowed back to school. I'd offer them to a local school or care home if you don't want them.

Seasonofthewitch83 · 23/02/2023 13:40

I would keep them, then you are able to offer them to friends and family if needed.

Its raging through my friend and family circle at the moment and our work still asks us to isolate so we are still testing if we feel rough. I also have previously fit and healthy friends suffering with Long Covid. I am living life but with caution.

Greenbeans123 · 23/02/2023 13:45

We still symptom test all the family as live with ecv and also me and dd are cv. Do you know any families who were shielding /still being careful because they'd probably use them? The government carried on sending us some for a while and now just send a pcr if we think we have covid but we don't want to send one off every time we have a symptom on the very long list. So prefer to do lfts.

megletthesecond · 23/02/2023 13:55

I'd offer them on FB pages. I still use them if we feel ill. An older box picked my covid up no problem last month.

dogdaydown · 23/02/2023 17:06

And that's why myself and others like me couldn't get any! Therefore I don't test and haven't since you had to pay for them, so could have passed on covid.

but you got loads, so that's ok then!

What a waste of money as they are most likely useless now.

So you should be absolutely ashamed.

IsaacNewtonPoppleford · 23/02/2023 17:10

dump them and forget about them!

If you have to do this as a last resort if none of the other suggestions work please take them to a pharmacy for safe (there are fluids in there) and proper (all the plastic!) disposal rather than chucking them in a bin.

I'd freecycle/freegle/facebook them.

Poppingwatermelons · 23/02/2023 17:18

I have some stored in a tin in the loft. They will be historically interesting one day.

So if you feel I'll and out of date tests say it's not covid, you go out?

monomatapea · 23/02/2023 17:27

You stockpiled 20 x 5?

Personally I'd keep a couple of boxes and then pop some in the food bank?

EatGrapes · 23/02/2023 17:36

To be fair to the op, those of you questioning why she has so many, there was never a shortage in my area. We ended up with loads of boxes, the DC were given them by school, DH and I were given them by work, then the need to regularly test was suddenly stopped, we were all given two boxes in advance, so were left with 10 boxes. We have actually used a fair few since, (three of us have tested positive this week!) so handy to have, and a box soon gets used up with a family of 5!

Ritasueandwhatshisfacetoo · 23/02/2023 17:44

Love mumsnet for faceless judgemental pricks.

I hope those of you being vocal about it duly buy a kit when you get a cold! And guess what? I live in a council house and I don’t work! You’re paying for me and my test kits. Have a nice day

The OP didn't necessarily stockpile, we've got loads too as the kids kept coming home from school with them and DH and I were given loads from work. We've given most of them away to other family/friends.

Yeah and at the end the council round here had vans and literally were just trying to get rid of them

IsaacNewtonPoppleford · 23/02/2023 17:48

So you should be absolutely ashamed.

No she shouldn't, there are lots of reasons people ended up with more than they needed that were completely legitimate, and if the situation had been managed better and more clearly by the government, people wouldn't have felt the need to stockpile at certain times (if indeed she did this).

POTC · 23/02/2023 17:52

I've just passed on my unused ones to a someone who has vulnerable family members so tests every time they go to visit them. There will be people local to you in the same situation

Oh course she ducking stockpiled! She's already said she's ashamed and she should be!

GREEDY!

dogdaydown · 23/02/2023 17:58

*fucking not ducking!

No I don't, can't afford it, because of people like you being so bloody greedy why should I?

dogdaydown · 23/02/2023 18:00

@Ritasueandwhatshisfacetoo so you didn't even need them to be able to go out to work? With vulnerable people?

Why did you get so many?

Poppingwatermelons · 23/02/2023 20:21

There were vans literally giving them away where I live. Two boxes per person. I saw people take them then dump unopened boxes in the street. The van parked near my bus stop. I saw the men most days. The man said I would be helping them out if I took boxes. Which is why I ended up with piles of boxes. I gave loads of boxes away to people isolating, my neighbours carer, friends busy working who couldn't get to the van. I wasn't stockpiling but managed to get hold of may be 10 boxes a week. I still have a number of boxes.

dementedpixie · 23/02/2023 20:47

My ds used to bring them home from school, they gave them out in the sports centre and in asda so we ended up with a few boxes too.

I have given some to family who had covid recently who had none left and didn't want to buy them

Ritasueandwhatshisfacetoo · 23/02/2023 21:14

I got 5 boxes shoved at me in our local shopping precinct. They were on a mission to get rid. Then I had both my kids bring home several boxes each. I already had a supply at home. I should have rejected the ones at the shops. When I said ashamed, what I actually should have said was, regretful that I ended up with that many. But I don’t care what the trolls say. Let them get all gammon faced about it for all I care. I only wanted to know how to not waste them now I have them.

OP posts:
Titsywoo · 23/02/2023 21:19

How old are they? I noticed that after 6 months or so the liquid in the testing kit had mostly evaporated.

Not a troll and not "gammon" faced whatever that is?

They were shoved at you?

Everyone seems to treat you badly somehow?

Trolls
Gammon faced people
People shoving stuff at you

How odd!
