I’ve just had to have a tooth removed and I’m cross

I have never had any dental work maybe three fillings and I’m in my mid 50s.

Transfer to new private dentist and I go there because my tooth feels like it’s sticking up a bit like kind of puffy out of my gum. Oh yes he says you’ve got an infection in it mention something to do with my sinus then says that the pie underneath a tooth will drain away.

Come back if it’s very sore.

Well it’s not very sore but it definitely doesn’t go away a month later I go back. Oh yes, he says it’s now fractured. It must’ve chewed on it when you were asleep before I know what was happening the tooth is removed on charge £200.

I’m absolutely reeling from this coincidentally as he maintains it’s the same tooth as had the infection now had to be removed.

I’m really sad. Am I I’m absolutely reeling from this coincidentally as he maintains its the same 230 infection now had to be removed I’m really sad. Am I making a link between the two that doesn’t exist or would one necessarily lead to the other?

I consider myself a bit of an old hat at the dentist, as I have a genetic malfunction that's left me with very weak, fragile, pathetic teeth, so I spend a lot of time with my dentist!

Did he not give you antibiotics for the infection first? He doesn't sound very competent, I've had multiple infections and abscesses and never just been told to leave it to drain on its own..

I had an infection recently that left my tooth feeling raised like that, I had two courses of antibiotics to clear it then a root canal, temporary dressing, another root canal to make sure he got everything, then filled. Managed to save the poor tooth. I've had so many problems with my teeth but my dentist has always been great and talked me through absolutely everything in fine detail, and never pulled a tooth unless absolutely necessary. I swear private dentists are the worst for just whipping teeth out so they can charge you!

Theos · 22/02/2023 22:53

No. No antibiotics. As I’m not au fait with dentist I didn’t know what to do
I also felt rushed and patronised.

sorry to hear that OP. next time get a second opinion if you can!

Theos · 22/02/2023 22:55

Thanks, by the time I was there I could see the fracture down the tooth

That's awful, I'm so sorry! I had a very similar experience with a private dentist and a tooth extraction so it put me off them forever. I thought they'd be better because... You know, you pay through the nose for them. But tbh I was extremely disappointed with my experience too.

I hope it didn't hurt too much. It's only one at least, just keep an eye on the area as it doesn't sound like he's done anything at all to treat the infection so it could come back or spread to other teeth.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/02/2023 22:59

I had a similar thing about five years ago with an upper wisdom tooth - there was infection in the gum and the tooth felt raised. I was given a week of ABs and then had to go back. Because it was a wisdom tooth my dentist said extraction was the best course of action, but if it had been a different tooth she would have done a root canal per pp. I actually had a lower molar extracted around the same time, and I swear I had about 90 appointments and treatments before I eventually asked for it to be removed. The next step was going to be a re-root canal with a very expensive specialist and I had just had enough by then. My dentist is very thorough and very patient.

Theos · 22/02/2023 23:03

Ah so maybe i reluctantly got to the inevitable outcome

I’m a bit lost with what you’re trying to say, but assume you went to the dentist, they said is possibly an infection or the pain could be sinus related and come back if it gets worse. You went back they took the tooth out. Now you’ve still got an infection.

Generally they will do an X-ray to check for an infection and give antibiotics and only take the tooth out if it can’t be saved. I had a tooth out that and had a couple of courses of antibiotics before and after.

Thing what made me laugh last time I went, I was asked if there was any changes after having an X-ray.

I said yes I had my tooth out (was taken out elsewhere as went on the NHS rather than the surgery I go to as they wanted to charge private rate due to being impacted. I thought NHS might knock me out, but no it was just an extraction at a different practice, so don’t get their pricing)

Anyway, the Dentist questioned me if I was sure I had an extraction, yep I’m pretty certain I said as it was awful and I now have a big gap there.

So I’m now not confident they have a clue what they are doing, and just charge ridiculous rates just because they can.

BreviloquentBastard · 22/02/2023 23:08

It probably would have had to come out eventually, but it wouldn't have killed him to be kind and explain it properly without patronising you, especially for that price!

Tethersend01 · 22/02/2023 23:14

OP if uour tooth was fractured to the point you could see it I’m afraid there would have been no option but to extract- any tooth thats fractured all the way down is unsalvagable, its not a case of the dentist being incompetent theres just literally nothing to be done.
i would wonder if perhaps the tooth had fractured or started to fracture and this was what allowed the infection in originally? Fractures can be almost impossible to see with the naked eye.
i had the exact same issue a few years ago- in fact I was aware of clenching my tooth it was waking me up at night! A small crack got bigger and the pain whilst I was waiting for extraction was honestly the worst I have experienced in my whole life- nothing touched it. Getting the tooth out was sad but I never regretted it once!!!!

Theos · 23/02/2023 10:14

Thank you.

anyone can advise on implants?

OP posts:
FrostyFifi · 23/02/2023 10:17

Tbh if it's cracked it needs to come out, at least you didn't faff around spending huge amounts of time and money on root canals etc first.

Is it front or back? If it's not visible I wouldn't bother with in implant, I'm down an upper molar on either side and it's absolutely fine.

Theos · 23/02/2023 10:17

Yeah. Think I’m cross they didn’t give me antibiotics really.
the idea about the fracture being there before is a theory
at any rate I’m not going back there. :(

"I've never had any dental work, just 3 fillings" - you have had dental work then!

BreviloquentBastard · 23/02/2023 10:24

I've also got implants, aren't I just a wealth of toothy information.

I had an abscess in one of my back bottom molars and it was mistreated (I too was not given antibiotics and it was left too long) and ended up resulting in three back teeth being removed. It was a mess and a nightnmare.

I had to have bone grafting done so there was enough of an anchor for the implants which was expensive and painful. Then implants to replace the missing teeth, the actual "anchors" were put in under general anaesthetic, not sure if that's standard but I was horribly anxious about it so thats what we did.

They were very sore and annoying for the first few months but they're great now, can't really tell them apart from real teeth.

Yeah I suppose you’re right, but one of those when I was about 10 and then very low level. I don’t really understand all my friends who are having crowns and dentures and stuff so that’s what I meant but thank you for letting me clarify that

sounds like the dentist did the right thing

Tigertigertigertiger · 23/02/2023 11:51

Thank you @RobinHumphries

Antibiotics are rarely required in dentistry.

It's a myth that refuses to die that a tooth abscess needs antibiotics. Or that you shouldn't extract an abscesses tooth.

It needs drainage !! ( lancing an obvious swelling / extraction / root canal )

Theos · 23/02/2023 18:04

@BreviloquentBastard ive dm you
