To expect a promotion?

So cutting a long story short, I (22F) work in property rentals, and have done for nearly a year and a half now. In this time I’ve taken on a lot of extra responsibilities that wouldn’t normally be expected of just a negotiator.

I am contracted to work 5 days a week 8-6 and every other Saturday. I often will swap my Saturdays/work extra if the other girls ask, I have worked in our other offices for up to 6 weeks when asked by management even when it is an almost two hour drive to and from each day. I have almost always gone above and beyond my targets, I have received the most positive google reviews out of the entire company, I almost daily stay at work late and have provided training to less experienced staff.

So getting to the point, I have come into work today where one of my seniors has told me that the director has pulled them aside to discuss how the company will be moving forward, and they have questioned as to whether they should promote me or another member of staff who has been with the company for about 6 months. This member of staff is notoriously scatterbrained, has had very basic training and still has a lot to learn. She is a lovely girl with fantastic social skills and could talk the ear off a donkey and I really like her but I can’t help but feel offended?

This is a promotion I have been promised endlessly in my reviews for the last 6 months. I have also been promised company cars that I have not received even though I am covering 700-900 business miles a month and putting that wear and tear on my own car!

AIBU to be upset?

What‘s to stop you applying for higher promotions outside of the company? Sounds like you’d get a great reference and you’ve got loads of useful experience.

Thank you for your reply.

I think I’ve tried to play the long game here because deep down I do love the company, and most the people I work with which is a rarity in jobs! I also don’t think the grass is always greener! But I guess I’m just frustrated and feel undervalued, and that being said, if they were to promote my colleague, I’m not sure I could continue working for the company.

I understand what you’re saying about not wanting to leave, but things change in companies and lots of those people will probably be working elsewhere in 5 years time.

I think I’d probably see what happens in the near future and make a decision after that.

You need to tell them what you've just told us!!!

You apply somewhere else and climb the ladder and get a lot more money everytime you go.
