Asking for ideas really, I have learning difficulties too so only got Fs and Gs in my exams despite trying hard.
Not bar work as I have previous issues with alcohol and using as a social anxiety crutch.

Watching with interest.
Good thread.

What are your strengths? e.g Are you creative? Are you a people person? Are you physically fit? Do you like the outdoors. Tell us more about you.

I have some similar traits to the things I have read about Adhd. But don't officially have it (sorry if me answering is rude to some people because of that)

I work in housing and I like it, very varied, get out and about most days, love chatting to people.
I am better about knowing about what is going on in lots of different matters rather than one long project which I would get bored by (and probably never finish!)
Lots of roles don't need specific qualifications except maybe maths and English gcse.

Definitely not a people person.
I can hyper focus but I do get flustered if there's lots of demands or distractions.

I have no fear, I like skydiving and fast cars, I'm no girlie girl and if I didn't have intellectual difficulties I'd have been a fire fighter, mountain rescuer, police or coast guard, that's my personality I am good in an emergency but lack motivation if there's no urgency, definitely couldn't do a desk job but I like the idea of helping others.

I also have similar traits. I am good at masking so I tend to be excellent in jobs until I can't keep up the act anymore. I now work part time in a library and it's great. First everyone there has some eccentricity but also it's a slow pace job so I have time to process things and mistakes are easily rectified quite often with no one noticing. I also like helping people and I love books.

Do you need any qualifications for your job?

I think you'll get very mixed responses because generally having ADHD doesn't define you and therefore doesn't dictate what jobs you can go for. It sounds as though its more your other difficulties (as you worded it) that have held you back? Could you resit any relevant exams with help i.e tutoring if it'll get you to where you want to be? Have you looked into becoming a retained firefighter?

Have you looked into Access to Work coaching to support you? www.gov.uk/access-to-work

I currently work for the NHS in mental health. I find my ADHD really helpful because I often can read people and pick up on things others can’t. I really care about people too and I ask questions others in my team wouldn’t. I think differently and I find it works. That’s just me but ADHD has been a real strength in working with mental health as I kinda get some of the things they struggle with and understand.

Interesting because I also have inattentive ADD and am a librarian. I do need great attention to detail which suits my hyper focus so no issues there but I struggle to finish projects I've started and can struggle to settle down to tasks that don't grab my attention until they become really urgent. There are a massive amount of interruptions during the day which can either be great (if I'm struggling to focus on another task) or awful (if I'm hyper focussed on something and have to stop).

OP - you might be able to find a library assistant job in a public library which requires little in the way of qualifications. Most qualified librarians will have done a masters degree to qualify.

autienotnaughty · 22/02/2023 12:08

GCSEs and some customer service experience. It's the kind of job that's it's helpful to have some experience (volunteering) for as they can be quite sought after. I have a degree but not related. I just sold my self on my transferable skill set. (I previously worked in a children centre) and my love of literature

CaponeOnTax · 22/02/2023 12:12

You should look into leadwork. There’s a huge UK shortage of people able to do leadworking - and you can charge £££! You need to be OK with heights as lots of the work is eg church roof stuff. But it is rewarding often outdoors and with lots of interesting buildings and history. You’d be great.
