AIBU to think it could simply be the mattress?

I am 44 and my body aches all over whenever I move, all day long. I feel 100 years old.

Not been to the GP as I’m currently trying to sort my psoriasis and they only deal with 1 thing at a time.

I thought maybe psoriatic arthritis but symptoms say it’s more the joints. Mine def feels muscular.

So could it be as simple as my really old mattress? I share a double with husband and on most nights a starfishing 3 year old. Anyone felt more sprightly after a new mattress?

Quite possibly. Can you swap out your bed for a king size and a lovely new mattress? For me it was hips and joints that got better with a new mattress.

Feeling100 · 22/02/2023 09:26

@HyggeTygge that’s good to hear it’s a possibility. We’re trying to move house this year so I think for now we’ll have to stick to the double, I’d want the biggest bed possible when we move. Then the double can go to my 7 year old.

Might take the family to try them out this weekend. £500 on a new mattress think might be worth a try.

Some brands of mattress offer free trials, eg 100 nights. You could try a new mattress and if you didn’t notice a difference in how you feel, that would save you from buying a mattress you didn’t need.

Sounds funny, but try sleeping on the floor (put a cosy duvet underneath you) for a few days and see if that has any effect. If it does, I would go for a new, much firmer mattress.

HyggeTygge · 22/02/2023 11:00

"Firm = better for your back" is a bit of an old wives' tale I think (unless you are talking from experience!) - when I've looked into it, unless you are very overweight, softer is better for supporting joints. My old one was firm, new one was medium/soft - soft but supportive, not saggy - and it was miles better.

That was about 8 years ago and I'm beginning to wonder if it's time for a new one :(

Ridiculousradish · 22/02/2023 11:02

Possibly! I've just returned an Emma because it made my hips and legs ache as way too soft. Now got a very firm orthopaedic mattress with a topper and zero hip pain since.

HyggeTygge · 22/02/2023 11:11

I stand corrected then! Horses for courses... I quite like memory foam ones except they are far too hot and sweaty. I got Ikea Hovags for my kids and they seem really nice for the price, but I think Ikea have replaced them now.

Can also suggest Vitamin D as an easy potential fix. I get the one you sprat under your tongue and its the only supplement I remember on a regular basis!

CatMattress · 22/02/2023 11:12

Or spray, even....

endofthelinefinally · 22/02/2023 11:15

Get a deep sprung mattress with an integral memory foam top layer. I have arthritis and a hard mattress is agonising for me.

Feeling100 · 22/02/2023 11:18

All great ideas thanks. Will try vit D, night on the floor, followed by mattress shopping!

Could also be peri menopause. I was similar in my 40’s. I bought a new bed, took vitamin d, turmeric, did yoga and nothing helped. Had two frozen shoulders . Even had an mri on my hips.

now in my 50’s and on hrt, things have improved a lot.

Feeling100 · 22/02/2023 11:36

@CrystalMaisie peri menopause did cross my mind too.

@HyggeTygge I completely agree about firm being better for you back. I once bought a new mattress on that basis and it was awful. Soft with support is best. Mine was very expensive but with a 25 year guarantee Blush and has millions of pocket springs and then a three inch memory foam layer. It's been amazing.

WorkingFromHomeRocks · 22/02/2023 12:24

Definitely. I ached all over until we upgraded to a 2200 spring mattress with a gel (I think) topper. It’s just perfect. It was about £1800 but we love it so much. Now, whenever we go away, no bed compares and we are both usually in pain the next day.

AnOldCynic · 22/02/2023 12:37

Can't believe no one has mentioned the doctors only treating one thing at a time! That's ridiculous. What if things are related?

Definitely try what people are suggesting on here. Also Magnesium supplements? But then I'd go back to the doctors.

Feeling100 · 22/02/2023 12:56

@AnOldCynic I know considering the pain could quite easily be related to the psoriasis as it’s inflammation based. To be fair they’ve always been really dismissive of psoriasis.

Once I was desperate for help as it was out of control and the GP said well it’s chronic and you’ll always have it, so that was helpful.

@WorkingFromHomeRocks I’m happy to splash some cash if it’ll make me feel more my age. I believe we spend a third of our lives in bed so cost per use must be very high.

Could be! I’ve had terrible back pain after sleeping on soft mattresses on holiday before. Definitely worth a try.

NoProbLlamaa · 22/02/2023 13:50

Absolutely could be! I would say it could be the bed too.

We bought a great mattress but when we later upgraded our tatty cheap bed to something solid, we noticed a massive difference.
