There was a lovely man on TV tonight on the news and he was going swimming at 97.
He was enjoying it so much and basically saying keep trying things and having fun.
It was a pleasure to watch him.
Do your parents or grandparents do Sport etc?Think it really does help to keep you fit if you can manage it.
97 what a nice age to still be swimming.

My grandmother had her last sport report in the local newspaper after her obituary. She would have been very proud of that!

Phos · 21/02/2023 21:48

My Mum and stepdad are mid/late sixties. She does pilates and yoga and he plays golf.

My in-laws, my FIL likes to walk but nothing strenuous and my MIL likes to swim and claims ballet is her "passion" but other than throwing herself around the living room, I don't think she does/has ever practised it for real.

JamMakingWannaBe · 21/02/2023 21:49

My great aunt played archery into her 80s.
I see a lot of older people on the local bowling green.

clopper · 21/02/2023 21:49

My parents in their mid eighties walk each day, play indoor cricket and Zumba at their complex designed for older people. They have played sport throughout their lives several times a week. My DF exercises for one hour a day doing stretches etc. they are incredibly healthy and put me to shame.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 21/02/2023 21:50

My mum is in her 60s and ran the London marathon in under 5 hours last year.
My granny and great aunt were walking dogs daily well into their mid 80s.
My aunt is 70 something and still goes hiking every weekend, another aunt of mine must be 80 now and bikes round the park a couple of times a week

Pinksalty · 21/02/2023 21:53

My mum has lost a lot of weight recently (7st) and she does a weights class, a circuits class and swims once a week. She is 67!
mu dad is 76 is and is a perpetual potter re so rarely sits down!

Soapnotshowergel · 21/02/2023 21:53

No, as well as being the first in my family to have a degree, I'm also the first to do any regular exercise. I come from a very sedentary family.

FIL plays golf 5 times a week at 76. I've told DH not to get any ideas about his future retirement.

EdHelpPls · 21/02/2023 21:54

Parents mid 60s, dad runs marathons, long hikes and regular 100+ mile bike rides. Mum just broke her hip a few months ago but before did more gentle things - ballet, yoga and walking groups all aimed at age 50+.

Grandparents passed long ago but none were sporty.

I'm glad if I fit 10,000 steps in in a day.

SwingandaPrayer · 21/02/2023 22:52

my parents are mid 70s and do their Joe Wicks for Seniors and Pilates every day. They are also still active hikers.

Pinkieismyname · 21/02/2023 22:57

My Mum of 88 walks 2/3 miles a day and aquarobics twice a week. My dad wouldn't do much other than a gentle walk but he used to garden heavily up to a year ago. Had all their own veg growing, rarely bought any. Me 60 and Dh do 5km every day and regularly 80 km cycles. Feel gotta keep moving to make the best of life😃

Confusedmeanderings · 21/02/2023 23:05

My lovely Dad at 94 was told by his GP that it would be good to keep moving. It was the kind of generalised, throwaway piece of advice that is often given to elderly people and usually means a bit of chair aerobics or a gentle walk around the block. Dad took him at his word though and got himself an exercise bike. He did an hours cycling every other day until he died aged 97. I miss him.

randomsabreuse · 21/02/2023 23:06

Mine don't but there's a very competitive over 70s category in my sport. Some of the O70s even compete against seniors (and can catch out the young and naive). There's world and European championships for over 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.

There's masters categories in a lot of sports, starting at over 40 (or 35). Many are hotly contested!

PandaOrLion · 21/02/2023 23:08

DHs uncle was fasted in the over 70s age category in the london marathon a few years ago. His mum, aged 73 plays tennis twice a week and badminton once. She and FIL do hill walking a lot.

megletthesecond · 21/02/2023 23:10

Mum is in her 70's and does zumba. She walks a lot too.

My parents are late 70s. They play tennis 3-5 times a week for around 2 hours at a time. Often go for 15+Mile cycle rides and 5+ Mile walks, probably at least once a week.
Dm may also swim a couple of times during the week and Dr used his rowing machine and weights.

they're far fitter than me.

Glitterybee · 21/02/2023 23:16

No, my parents do not move off the sofa. No activities, exercise or hobbies. They are only in their 50s!

My grandmother is in her 70s and she doesn't have any health issues, yet she is immobile! She wouldn’t even attempt a 5 minute walk.

It’s important for me to break this cycle and set an example for my kids, so I walk for an hour every single day, do weighted workouts and yoga. I think it’s very important to live an active life, especially as you get older.

Holycrapoly · 21/02/2023 23:21

My DM is 75 and does very little but never has. In-laws are mid sixties, they used to be very active but not so much anymore. They walk every day but that's about it now.
DH and I (42, 44) play sport 2/3 times per week as well as walking every day and some gym type work. I will do this as long as my health allows and then if needed will move to something more gentle. I will always be active though.

MrsClatterbuck · 21/02/2023 23:25

I know of a local lady who swims most days and she is in her nineties. She was wild swimming long before it became a thing. Also two sisters in their seventies who go to the gym.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/02/2023 23:29

DM did a 6 week yoga course in the 90s, and had some Lizzie VHSs (TVam- pre Mr Motivator)

I don't want to be breaking bones when I fall over from my late 50s so I'm already on to the weights/ high impact exercise.

My dad attempted to take up jogging, but it was too little (well, too much really) too late for his heart. Early 50s.

Their age group (80s) had the odds against them really. Exercise for the sake of it wasn't necessary in their youth, and exercise culture has been slow at filling the gap in health caused by lifestyles becoming more sedentary as they reached middle-age. DM's the type who wouldn't dream of lifting weights because it's not ladylike and you might get unfeminine big muscles. Unfortunately she's ended up with osteoarthritis disrupting a third of her life instead. The longer I can delay that, the better.

I love seeing older people exercising; it's great for body and mind.

AlannaOfTrebond · 21/02/2023 23:36

My DF is 84, still cycles, walks a few miles a day and has a PT who he does weights with twice a week. Weight training is my passion and DF gets quite competitive!

I also have a friend in his mid 70's who knocks out 40km bike rides (in some seriously hilly areas) 3 or 4 times a week.

I'm really hoping I take after my Dad and can still enjoy exercise and the outdoor life well into my 80's.

JaninaDuszejko · 21/02/2023 23:44

MIL (mid 80s) does aquarobics and climbs the stairs in her house. She's got osteoporosis now so it's really important she keeps up her strength.

DM (mid 70s) does yoga and a lot of walking.

I'm in my 50s and swim 5 days a week, it's a great exercise for all ages and for those with disabilities as well.

TakeMe2Insanity · 21/02/2023 23:49

My mother died at 80 last year and would regularly walk the 4 miles round the local park ❤️. When she was in hospital prior to her death the consultants were shocked at her good muscle tone.

Orders76 · 21/02/2023 23:58

Both my parents have always said keep moving, one was a cyclist and the other walks. So important to stay as mobile as you can.

greenspaces4peace · 22/02/2023 00:06

my mom currently 90 has been a great role model up till covid doing line dancing three times a week.
currently only once a week and bowling once a week.
