Mocking Christianity

603 replies

Ihatepcos · 21/02/2023 20:45

I am so sick of people thinking it's okay to ridicule Catholicism and Christianity. This is especially apparent on Mumsnet. Every time there's a thread about religion I can't even read the replies because they're so awful.

The same doesn't seem to apply to the Muslim, Jewish, Hindu faiths etc.

If you don't believe in God that is your choice. But purposely mocking someone's faith and calling it a load of bullshit (and worse) is just not acceptable. So many people turn to faith to help them through extremely tough times in life and you are mocking the only thing that is keeping them going.

Agree. I’m a Christian. I don’t mind the disagreements etc, but people are downright rude to us when they’d never dare be so to Jewish people or muslims. Either pick: you think religion is ridiculous and you tell us so, or don’t, but the dumping on one group but not another is pathetic.

Nonicknamesleft · 22/02/2023 20:53

I think there is a persistent misunderstanding amongst non-Christians that we claim some sort of superiority by dint of our faith. As @pointythings and @Lentilweaver have said, members of all faiths and none demonstrate the same values that are sometimes said to be 'Christian'. Anyone who thinks they're somehow better than others because they believe they're a Christian has missed the point.

Arguably, there are no uniquely Christian values in the social sense (of doing good, being patient, blah blah). What makes a Christian is the acceptance of Christ as Saviour and son of God, and recognition of oneself as a sinner. Jesus taught that after loving God, the most important thing is to love our neighbour as ourselves, which is the imperative at the root of Christian charity etc. Any real Christian will freely admit to trying, and failing much of the time, but trying nevertheless.

The stuff we believe about Christ and sin is what we have in common; the values we try to live by are because of that belief. Our right to identify in the faith doesn't depend on how successfully we model those things, but we should possess the desire to.

Botw1 · 22/02/2023 20:54

Why do people keep saying it's unique to Christianity and no one said anything tk other religions?

It's patently rubbish.

I think all religions are ridiculous

On the values stuff, how do Christians know what jesus wanted?

GodisLove0 · 22/02/2023 20:59

@VestaTilley it's been a difficult read. I dont think I realised how much I am disliked, and have realised that this is probably true in real life. Something to think about maybe...

@Botw1 we read the new testament. Sometimes it's explicitly clear what Jesus wants, other times, we have to pray on it and wait.

MiniEggsz · 22/02/2023 20:59

Other faiths tend to be more respectful of other beliefs.
You mean your god, not god. There are many. Even amongst other Abrahamic religions, there are many different versions of the god you worship and came from the same place.
There are many older gods. If someone else of a different faith had written it, they'd say choosing not to believe in my gods/Hindu gods or whatever else.
Christianity, I would argue is the most violent religion/belief system the world has ever known. It would never have widely taken off beyond it's origins in Middle East if there hadn't been violence, separating families, doing whatever they deemed necessary to give the 'gift' of their god, then we would probably still be worshiping the many older gods. The ones native to wherever we live. These were deliberately wiped out as much as they could. In some ways, society still does celebrate older gods since so many Christian celebrations were made up to be a safer substitute for pagan ones.
Many christains today still think the greatest gift they can give you is their god.

Botw1 · 22/02/2023 21:01

@GodisLove0

Do you believe in a literal virgin birth and resurrection?

GodisLove0 · 22/02/2023 21:03

@Botw1 yes I do. I was 'bought up in church' and went away from God and faith. I came back to both and something changed in the way I felt. I do believe in these things. I am married to an atheist so understand how it sounds to other. people.

Very few even live as the bible tells them. Pretty sure quite a few are going to hell for their raincoat. Some seem to think the new testament was to replace the old one. Many are very judgemental, it says that their is only one judge, who are they to judge. Yet I know several, who I suspect think they are not judgemental but they most certainly are. Various other reasons why most Christians are going to hell. (Not that I believe in hell - but by their own beliefs). They seem to think believing in Jesus means that they can still 'sin' because that's what Jesus died for. It was supposedly to forgive past sins, if you change and have him in your heart etc. But people have decided he wouldn't mind this that and the other because he loves them.

Botw1 · 22/02/2023 21:05

@GodisLove0

Are you a creationist?

GodisLove0 · 22/02/2023 21:06

@Botw1 yes I am.

Botw1 · 22/02/2023 21:07

@MiniEggsz

Well, yeah that's why I ask.

The cherry picking.

So if its OK to ignore what the bible says about being gay, premarital sex or women having autonomy, how do you know its not OK to ignore other bits?

Botw1 · 22/02/2023 21:09

@GodisLove0

Interesting

Do you just ignore the science then (don't mean that to be rude but not sure how else to word it)

Or are you ID?

MiniEggsz · 22/02/2023 21:11

Also another reason is so many are anti Science.
Some believe dinosaur bones are a trick from the devil.
Some believe dinosaurs and humans lived together.
Some believe the ancient Egyptians were neanderthals etc because it was so long ago. And they built pyramids. So clearly humans of the various varieties have always been as intelligent and capable and we didn't evolve really....

pointythings · 22/02/2023 21:11

@OMG12
the vast majority of those are very sensible and I doubt there's a single human being who has enacted them perfectly their entire lives.

The problem with organised religion at least is that it often does not respect those who believe otherwise. I have not been to any services that were not Christian of some kind, but in all but one there's been a patronising little segment pitying those poor souls who do not know Christ, how miserable and bereft we must be. If that could be stopped, that would be a great start - accept that you don't need Christianity to live a happy, fulfilled life. Or any other faith either.

Respect me, and I'll respect you.

GodisLove0 · 22/02/2023 21:12

Sorry, I don't know what ID means?

No, you're not being rude at all.
I believe that God is the person behind the science. I actually love science, but when i see science working, i see God. Again, I completely understand how that may sound.

In answer to your question upthread, it's absolutely not ok to cherry pick (I think you mentioned that). Sin is sin is sin. I fail a lot, but do try.

Botw1 · 22/02/2023 21:15

@GodisLove0

Intelligent design.

Sounds like you are.

Which is a bit different to belief in a literal creationism story.

Im more familiar with your kind of beliefs than the cherry picking kinds

Leviticus is always a problem though eh? 😉

Clarabell77 · 22/02/2023 21:17

ElonsMusky · 21/02/2023 20:53

I openly mock all organized religions. I was raised in the Catholic cult so feel I'm allowed to criticize it as much as I want. But it's no better or worse than the other global mythologies/ fictional story books people have hilariously attached their sense of self worth to.

I’m not religious in the slightest but I never feel the need to mock and you just come across as nasty and quite full of hate tbh. A dose of religion would do you the world of good.

GodisLove0 · 22/02/2023 21:18

Haha, it is indeed.

"Leviticus shows the way to God, but only through sacrifice and blood."

I'm glad that's not a thing anymore.

Thank for being respectful. I know I how I sound to some people.

But whatever you believe, science, religion (or nothing, as my husband declares) there's always wonder to seen around you!

MiniEggsz · 22/02/2023 21:21

They can't.
It is against the word of their God, they'll be off to Hell.
Sure, it would be nice to think 'Well I know this magical creator said X, Y and Z. But he loves me and doesn't really mind if I just worry about Z' . They're going against the bible, therefore by their own beliefs they are off to Hell.

Clarabell77 · 22/02/2023 21:23

standingupforitanywhere · 21/02/2023 21:06

The thing people hate isn't likely to bear much resemblance to what you believe, OP. They tend to bundle up a host of stereotypes and cliches and claim that's what you believe so they age free to mock it.

In reality, most people's faith is far more nuanced than the mockers like to think.

I stopped caring much what anyone else thinks when someone told me he'd disproved god's existence because 'aliens'.

I don't mind what other people believe, or what they think about what I believe.

People who are rude are rude people whatever they may use to justify their rudeness!

Very well put.

MiniEggsz · 22/02/2023 21:23

ALSO...
Judaism is the original Abrahamic belief, they believe Jesus was a false profit.
The other Abrahmic beliefs that evolved after Jesus decided to leave out Lilith?!

Ceryneianhind · 21/02/2023 21:08

Why is it disgusting?

We don't pander to other ideas we may think as crazy? Why is it ok to believe in a God, and not an imaginary friend / Santa / East Bunny

Logically, to non religious people, there is no difference really - to us, there is no God and no Santa either

The difference is, that most athiests don't care that someone believes or not, where as the religious get offended when someone doesnt follow their God

A lot of them seem to use very emotive language for people who “don’t care”.

Most religious people don’t care whether other people follow their God, but I think most human beings care about being mocked and berated.

Botw1 · 22/02/2023 21:30

@Clarabell77

Most religious people don’t care whether other people follow their God

Yeah I don't think that's true.

Spreading the word/conversion is a major tenent of most religions.

Clarabell77 · 22/02/2023 21:32

Witchcraftandhokum · 21/02/2023 21:10

Yup. Raised catholic and I will mock the fuck out of any religion that is so misogynist as most of the Christianity faiths.

Also raised Catholic and agree about the misogyny but I don’t get the need to “mock the fuck out of it” - it comes across as hateful.
