Shock Not only that, but they don't let you do two payments any more, it's DD or all in one.. I'm not on a meter. This is a raise of £200 on last year. Is everyone else having the same uplift?

I agree with getting a meter, preferably a smart one.

My neighbours have three children and had been resisting getting one for years, assuming they'd be worse off.

The water company then made everyone in our area go onto a smart meter. As a result, my neighbours' water bill has reduced by a huge amount.

We have always been metered but the smart meter enabled us to detect a leak because we could see that we were using a steady stream of water all through the night.

I pay £20 a month with a meter for me and two kids. That seems a lot !

PuppyMonkey · 21/02/2023 17:19

I have a meter - family of four, last payment (December) was £123 the one six months before that was £180 (July). We have dishwasher, washer is on every day, we shower every day. Severn Trent.

You need a meter.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 21/02/2023 17:19

We're SWW, most expensive water in the country and only pay £45pm for two of us. If you are on a meter, is there a leak somewhere maybe?

WhereYouLeftIt · 21/02/2023 17:24

We are metered and pay £300/year for two of us. £850 is an awful lot.

xyzandabc · 21/02/2023 17:25

Just to echo others, get yourself on to a meter.

I've just looked at our water bills for the last 5 years. We've never paid more than £350 a year and last year it was only £240. We are a family of 5 in a 4 bed house.

Admittedly, we don't bath at all and not everyone showers every day, we don't water the garden (have several water butts), but we do run the dishwasher and washing machine at least daily

rothbury · 21/02/2023 17:25

Why don’t you have a water meter? Is there a difficulty with it?

Untitledsquatboulder · 21/02/2023 17:27

Just get a water meter if you don't think you use that much.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 21/02/2023 17:32

I live alone and pay £15 a month!
Definitely get a meter fitted

FavouriteSlippers · 21/02/2023 17:34

Ours was 500.
Metered 6 of us.
Filled a huge 18ft pool once.
Im careful with water but dh and teen use loads. Kids bath daily.

FKATondelayo · 21/02/2023 17:36

Family of 4 here paying less than £300 a year. We are here all day WFH, bathe like Cleopatra, hose the garden/dog and do at least a load of washing a day. Get a meter.

Lakeyloo · 21/02/2023 17:37

Speak to your supplier... you might have some kind of leak in the supply pipe ? Has your usage also gone up ?

Kennykenkencat · 21/02/2023 17:50

Last house was around £480 for the year. No water metre. Paid in 8 months instalments.

Water metre in this house, approximately £20 each for water and sewage paid monthly so £480 per year.

There are 4 adults.

£800 for water sounds extortionate

35965a · 21/02/2023 17:53

I have a meter, family of 4 and we pay £48 a month, £850 is crazy.

CeeJay81 · 21/02/2023 17:59

Ours is 529 a year un metered, 3 bed with the Welsh Severn trent which is dearer than most. Non of the neighbours have water meters cause I think there is an issue in our street with it. Not looked into it myself though. Its def worth asking about a meter at that price!

Rightsraptor · 21/02/2023 18:02

When I last moved house, I was 😡at how much higher my water bill was going to be compared with the old house. When I phoned them, they told me it was worked out from the council tax banding. I'd moved from A to B, although the house in band A was at that time worth more than the new, band B, house.

Anyway, I had a meter installed as I have more bedrooms than people - much cheaper!

GiltEdges · 21/02/2023 18:03

You would absolutely be better off paying for what you use by having a meter. As a family of 3 having daily showers, baths, etc we pay £42/month.

OhmygodDont · 21/02/2023 18:03

That’s a lot. £450 here for five of us, massive pool, fish tanks and a large garden / veg patch being watered.

DdraigGoch · 21/02/2023 18:07

Blimey, is there a leak? Do you have sprinklers or something?

My bill for the last six months came in at £141.01 for 24 cubic metres.

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/02/2023 18:24

I expect your property has a high Rateable Value (RV). It's an archaic system that pre dates the much hated poll tax of the pre Thatcher era. It bears no relationship to the current council tax.
If you go on a meter and also pay for sewerage (either to the same company or sewerage only company) then you will probably see a reduced sewerage bill. If it's not technically possible to fit a meter then ask your supplier for Assessed Measured Charges.
