Kidney beans are dangerous too

Anything is dangerous if you stire it or cook it wrongly.

If they were not safe generally they would have use by date not best before

Spanielsarepainless · 20/02/2023 20:27

Just thrown out lasagne sheets, bbe July 2017, and custard powder, bbe November 2008. I have Christmas pudding made in 2015. As long as the tin isn't rusty or blown the contents will be fine for years to come. And kidney beans and chickpeas are cooked before canning so all the warnings about poison are a tad dramatic.

WarmSausageTea · 20/02/2023 20:28

Raw or undercooked kidney beans can be harmful. Canned kidney beans are neither raw nor undercooked.

I suppose they could be dangerous if someone smacks you over the head with a can of them or drops one on you from a great height. Other than that, not so much.

I'm curious what the lasagne sheets were like. We're they still crunchy when you tried to break them and did they still look and smell OK? I'd probably have eaten them if so! Same for the custard tbh.

FictionalCharacter · 20/02/2023 20:39

All good. Anything in a tin is cooked at high temperature and virtually sterile. The toxins in legumes like kidney beans and chickpeas are destroyed by the industrial canning process. If the can is rusty or blown, that’s different and they should be thrown out.
There can be confusion with the American process of home “canning” which is what we in the UK call bottling. That can definitely be dangerous, because the food isn’t held at a high enough temperature all the way through to completely sterilise it. People have become very ill from home-bottled food.

They looked and smelled all right but I couldn't see myself using them in the next year or so as we've changed how we eat. Traumatic throwing out food that appeared edible though!

Tins are immortal.
As long as it's not damaged

This.

That datestamp's Aug 2123 as far as I'm concerned...

Fizbosshoes · 20/02/2023 20:48

I probably wouldn't eat both together unless you were expecting high winds!

LookingOldTheseDays · 20/02/2023 20:53

Tins are fine well beyond the best before, provided not rusty or blown. I'd eat both.

I've eaten lasagne sheets well past best before date. They were fine.
