To want to enjoy the flipping day?

I do all the food shopping and cooking. I happened to mention to my DH that it would be pancakes for tea tomorrow and he tutted and said 'ugh pancake day already - another bloody thing.'

For me, observing these days is just a bit of fun. I'm finding this attitude of his a bit depressing. It seems like everything like this is a big effort for him - valentine's day, mother's day etc. For this one though I just don't get it, someone is doing it all for you (fyi, he likes pancakes).

Is it a bit of a male thing or is he a killjoy (or am I overreacting?)

Whereas my DP made a special journey to Lidl to buy a huge jar of knock off hazelnut chocolate spread with which to adorn the pancakes. We are all children in this household! I spent 15 years with a misery guts like you describe, it's much more fun relishing the childish joy of pancakes and life in general. I'm sorry x

I would say feel free to cook yourself something else and enjoy your pancakes!!

He's a bit miserable. Is he a glass half empty worry wart?
If he is never grateful, excited or celebratery I could not live with him for long.

If he is merely into other things and enjoys the special occasions on the day, maybe he'll get better with age.

My dh is a bit like yours, to start with the weirdo doesn't like pancakes so he'll not be happy he has to make himself something else.

He hates to be told when he should do / celebrate something especially these days when others are encouraged to spend massive amounts of money. However he'd never try and spoil mine and the kids fun.

I buy his mum flowers for mothers day, he wouldn't, not out of spite or being nasty he just wouldn't want to be told "on this day you must celebrate your mum and buy he stuff", I'd hate for MIL to feel unappreciated but Dh does do a lot of his mum throughout the year and I can see his point

Nimbostratus100 · 21/02/2023 06:58

do you have children? I can understand if he just doesnt want pancakes, but he should be cheerful for his children

Nimbostratus100 · 21/02/2023 07:00

I agree mothers day and valentines day are just a drag, bigged up by card manufacturers, but pancake day is a family occasion for children

MeinKraft · 21/02/2023 07:01

Ask him when he turned into Victor Meldrew.

AuntieMarys · 21/02/2023 07:16

I have never made pancakes in my life. I'm 63 🤣

mewkins · 21/02/2023 08:33

Make yourself a massive pile of pancakes and eat them in front of him.

I don't see the issue with what he said 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nevermind31 · 21/02/2023 08:52

Don’t make him pancakes. If he asks… you didn’t want to add to his load

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 21/02/2023 09:21

Oooof fun sponge alert. Cut yourself free and the joy will come flooding back.

You don't see the issue with him putting a dampener on anything different the OP wants to do for a bit of fun?
