To go to hospital

Sorry for the AIBU. Looking for advice on health. Have had a sickness bug since Thursday, vomited up everything I ate that day. Have felt really really nauseaus since, the only relief I got was Saturday I made myself sick a couple of times (never done it before). Not vomited since but cannot face eating a thing, half a biscuit yesterday. Have tried stemitel and some anti nausea antihistamine which took the edge off but still cannot eat. Managing to drink. Obviously extremely weak at this stage, haven't been out of bed. Do you think I should phone an ambulance in the morning or try 111, I don't know if I need a drip or is that only if you can't keep fluids in? Just feel so dreadful.

My mum had a sickness bug like this and my dad genuinely thought he'd have to call her an ambulance. GP recommended full fat coke and milk and she picked up rather quickly after that. Try to get more fat into you via liquids to give you energy

crazycatladyof6 · 19/02/2023 23:43

Call 111

Ponoka7 · 19/02/2023 23:45

It's only if you can't keep down liquids that you need a drip. Set your alarm and try the GP, or 111/walk in in the morning. Lemonade or lucozade used to be given. As said full sugar drinks such as coke.

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 19/02/2023 23:45

Based on what you've written, I think you can try a bit more self care first. I wouldn't personally go unless after several days I still couldn't get fluids down.

I understand you feel wretched though. Some of the nausea you feel might be down to dehydration so on the understanding you're ok with fluids- keep drinking. Keep clear of caffeine. Get some diarolyte down you.

Or flat lemonade / coke in a pinch.

Aldisfinest · 19/02/2023 23:45

Give 111 a try if you're really concerned. I wouldn't go a&e or call an ambulance. They can asses you and go from there but tbh as long as your keeping fluids down I don't think they can do much. Just small sips of whatever fluid you can manage until you feel better.

Groutyonehereagain · 19/02/2023 23:45

Milk is the very last thing you should have. Coke is ok but put sugar in it, to take away the fizz. Try and drink plain water as well. If you can, try and eat a small amount of plain boiled rice. You don’t need a drip if you are drinking enough fluid. I hope you feel better soon. 💐

Transcriber · 19/02/2023 23:45

I'm sorry you are feeling so poorly. I don't understand why you felt the need to make yourself vomit yesterday. Especially if you had already brought everything up and had stopped vomiting naturally. What were you trying to bring up if you were unable to eat?
Sounds like a standard vomiting bug so wouldn't phone for an ambulance but if you're still concerned during night or in morning then by all means speak to GP or 111

Hayley37888 · 19/02/2023 23:46

There are no ambulances. They’re all on strike tomorrow remember

Justhereforaibu1 · 19/02/2023 23:46

Thank you for replying, I'll try some flat lucozade again although I felt awful last time I tried

There is a really bad Novo virus type bug going around at the moment.
I know a couple of people who have had it and had non-stop vomiting and so weak they couldn’t get out of bed.
Only you know how bad you feel but if you are keeping hydrated, you should hopefully be on the mend soon.
Let us know how you are in the morning.

Singleandproud · 19/02/2023 23:50

Have you got some ice lollies or ice cubes? Suck on those. With drinks take tiny sips every 15 minutes.

I had hyperemesis during pregnancy and those are the recommendations I was given. I was hospitalised and rehydrated with an IV but that was because I lost almost 1.5 stone in 6 days, my vomit was grainy and dark green and what little urine there was, was the colour of golden syrup.

GenerallyGreenerGrass · 19/02/2023 23:51

Norovirus …..

Thornrose · 20/02/2023 00:00

My mum just had a dreadful stomach bug or food poisoning, she's in her late 70s.

I called an ambulance as she had severe stomach pains and was in and out of consciousness. Awful diarrhoea and vomiting.

They came and took her to A&E and she was discharged the following morning.

I had to call 111 again the next day as she didn't seem to be recovering.

Long story short she's had a long and slow recovery. She was told to drink as much water as possible. Rest as much as necessary and gradually introduce solid food.

I was worried mum was completely dehydrated as she couldn't even turn over in bed or sit up. Despite this she didn't need to be admitted or attend hospital in hindsight.

QuestionableMouse · 20/02/2023 00:02

You don't need an ambulance.

Try small sips of full sugar coke or other fizzy pop. Literally a teaspoon full, give it a minute, then another spoonful. A bite of dry toast or plain salty crackers will help to settle your stomach too.

Dontfeedtheseagulls · 20/02/2023 00:05

An ambulance???

If you can post on Mumsnet you probably don't need an ambulance.

Sounds like standard bad stomach bug which I'd call 111 for after 72 hours if you felt you needed advice

(Assuming you aren't diabetic or with other health complications)

Hopefully you will soon feel better

Rebellious23 · 20/02/2023 00:11

I would hold off and ring the GP in the morning

Salonselectives · 20/02/2023 00:34

Can you ask someone to make you a jelly using a rehydration sachet?

Simple biscuits to nibble on like a ginger biscuit or rich tea biscuit.

Sour tasting sweets like a cherry drops or a lemon sherbet to suck

EsmeT · 20/02/2023 00:37

I've just had this bug. What helped me was full fat coke and milkshake.

Justhereforaibu1 · 20/02/2023 15:46

Thanks so much everyone. I think I've turned a corner. Don't feel as nauseaus today, still can't look at food but managing to drink lots of water and flat lucozade. Feel a bit more with it. Awful headache, didn't manage to sleep. Didn't ring 111 yet in the end. I can't have caffeine so coke is out, I don't think they do full sugar no caff. Slight lactose intolerance so no milkshakes here but thanks. Diarolyte a good shout.
I made myself sick the other night as acid was coming up my neck and I felt as if I had a boulder sitting in my stomach. It did help briefly, but probably not recommended.

Not sure about Norovirus, doesn't that come on quickly, my baby had been vomiting the Friday before last for a few days. I felt nauseated Thursday all morning but didn't vomit until the afternoon

HitTheRoadJackAndDontYouComeBack · 20/02/2023 21:22

Do you suffer from health anxiety?

Stomach bugs are deeply unpleasant but this sounds run of the mill to be honest and unless you're really dehydrated you can self care.

As for your previous comment about "calling an ambulance in the morning"...seriously??? An ambulance is for emergencies - if you can plan to wait for morning for one then you don't need one. Feeling weak and nauseous from a stomach bug does not need an ambulance unless there are other issues going on.

Hapoydayz · 20/02/2023 21:28

Definitely speak to a Dr, hopefully 111 will get back to you very soon. If a dog or cat were going through what you are everyone would say rush to the vets. Hope you are seen soon and get treatment.

BankOfDave · 20/02/2023 21:31

animals can’t communicate their illness or
self medicate. Most of the pets would be PTS given the many diseases people have on MN - what a v odd comparison.

Skinnermarink · 20/02/2023 21:34

Sorry you feel awful but there’s no cause for concern here if you’re able to take liquids and you aren’t being sick anymore. It sounds like a nasty stomach bug, but not serious.
