Posting on here as I’m not sure where to post this query.
Im sick of ads popping up everywhere so looked into ad blockers.
Found one that looked pretty good, looked at the reviews etc. The price was £8.99. Thought to myself that’s reasonable, except it’s not, it’s not an annual sub, it’s £8.99 a month…it didn’t state that on the specifications page. Just £8.99.
Its offering me a free three day trial then it’ll cost me the monthly sub. It’s asking me to accept T&C’s. I’ve haven’t clicked on that. Im worried I’m going to be charged...

Use the Brave browser. It’s free unless you want VPN, etc. I use the app on iPhone and it blocks all ads on mumsnet, youtube, etc. Couldn’t be without it!

Airplant · 19/02/2023 13:44

As PP said I sometimes use Brave browser for android on my mobile and ADblock plus for chrome on my PC both free and no issues with either.

nosyupnorth · 19/02/2023 13:47

Firefox browser + ublock origin and avoid apps in favour of using browser wherever possible.
I hate how inundated with ads things have become but £££ for a paid adblocker is just playing into the same system.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 19/02/2023 14:34

Thank you for the quick responses. I’m going to delete the app and try the Brave browser. I’m a bit clueless about these things, I’m on Safari.
The one I looked at is ‘ Bee’ something or other. It didn’t fill me with confidence when I looked at the T&C page, an ad popped up covering half the page.

I just use AdBlock which I don't pay for. I never see ads on youtube etc. Very occasionally you need to switch it off to view certain sites but it just toggles on and off up in the task bar.

Noodlewave · 19/02/2023 14:48

Get a raspberry pi, install pi hole and set it up as your DNS. Plenty of guides online on how to do it

hekissedmybottom · 19/02/2023 15:13

Is the Chrome extension no longer free? I've had it about 7 years and they asked for a contribution but ultimately you can add it for nothing. It's amazing, no ads, ever, on anything.

Reviving this thread as desperate to block ads.

CoffeeMachineNewbie · 05/02/2024 22:59

Make sure you turn your adblocker off temporarily if you are using any cashback sites or they cant track you and pay you.

This 👆

It is remarkably easy to do and very effective.

A Raspberry Pi is a very small computer. They are very cheap and can be used for all sorts of things. Pi Hole is software that runs on the Raspberry Pi to do the specific task of blocking adverts as follows:-

DNS is a Domain Name Server. The Internet works in numbers, but humans work in names. So when you enter something like mumsnet.com, the Internet uses a Domain Name Server to translate mumsnet.com into the numbers that the Internet understands.

Using your Raspberry Pi computer that is running the Pi Hole software as a Domain Name Server enables you to insert a barrier that translates all the website names that humans understand into the numbers the Internet understands, and by some mysterious magic to filter out any adverts by blocking the numbers that they come from in order that your Web browser / youtube etc doesn't show them.

It's a bit more complicated, but in simplistic terms, that's about the size of it.

Wow! Thanks for the explanation.

I dont pay for anything, I dont know what Ive got, OH just manages all that. some sites still have ads on, like this one, and other sites I cant get into at all as it wont let me with adblocker and Im not faffing about trying to change it and turn it on and off, wouldnt have a clue.

cakeorwine · 06/02/2024 21:41

Some websites don't like adblockers - the Daily Mail keeps telling me off for using one and even You Tube had a go!!

I use Malwarebytes

Sidebeforeself · 06/02/2024 21:52

What the what now?!

Sidebeforeself · 06/02/2024 21:53

I am depressingly dim when it comes to all this malarkey

I've never paid for Adblock and I've used it for years

They do encourage you to donate but it's completely optional.

TheSmallAssassin · 24/02/2024 10:34

I don't use an ad blocker, because I think it's a small price to pay for a free service. How else are websites supposed to make any money (or even cover their costs)?

Unfortunately I find ads make sites completely unreadable these days. If they went down the DM route of forcing you to unblock ads, I just wouldn't read them anymore.
