Wedding dress - feeling ripped off

Helloitsmejan · 18/02/2023 20:32

Hi - really here to rant.

Had a dress that I bought for what was to be our civil ceremony, but then got pregnant and then had a miscarriage and with all of that we just decided to put the wedding on the back burner, whilst we try IVF. Anyways finally decided to put my dress for sale on stillwhite. Never worn but appreciate I was never going to get my money back on it, so reduced to half what I paid for it.

A week or so later I had an interested buyer who just wouldn't really take no for an answer, kept telling me she was a new mum so money was tight, they were going to have a small wedding and the dress would be perfect but wanted considerably less for it. I kept being polite but stating I couldn't go down essentially to 70% what I paid. At this stage I was also having second thoughts and thinking maybe to just keep the dress as I did love it, but eventually we agreed to 60% off what I had originally paid. Even on the day she was to pay she kept stalling and asking if I could reduce further or send it postage free. All with the whole I'm a new mum message.

Anyways finally sent it to her and literally 3 days later it's back on stillwhite for considerably more than what I was looking for from the same lady! There is no chance its been worn by her at all. She even states its never been worn. She claimed she was going to get married spring time! Just feeling stupid and know it's my own fault for selling it and letting her "I'm a new mum" message to make me feel I was doing a nice thing!

Anyways I don't even know why I'm writing this to be honest - just prob emotional cause if everything had gone to plan would be counting down for the baby and then perhaps I would have also been thinking about the wedding down the line.

That's a shitty thing to do & she clearly doesn't really care otherwise she wouldn't have advertised it on the same site 🤷🏻‍♀️

Post the link so we can bombard her with fake interest!

MistyGreenAndBlue · 18/02/2023 21:04

I'm in for a bit of time wasting Grin

It would be my pleasure - the nasty cow.

Me too. Post the link.

What goes around comes around…

EasterIssland · 18/02/2023 21:15

Can you report her for doing it ?
some of the groups I’ve been at have got this banned. But it’s with ethical brands so everyone tries to be as fair as possible. Few people bought most wanted prints and went to eBay to sell them and got kick out of the groups

sorry it’s happened to you.

Tippexy · 18/02/2023 21:18

Maybe it didn’t fit her?

FlissyPaps · 18/02/2023 21:18

Is it against the websites terms and conditions?

If not, there’s not much you can do OP. Unless you choose to tweet about her and do a post on Facebook/instagram/TikTok in hopes it goes viral to shame her.

Morally, she’s done a shitty thing. But legally, has she done anything wrong?

ThinWomansBrain · 18/02/2023 21:18

Sounds awful - I don't know the site, but to report her if that's an option.
A few years ago I got really hacked off with someone on freecycle - she was always first to appear, and always had more and more elaborate excuses as to why she needed things - awful woman.
Either she was a hoarder, or selling them for a profit - it wasn't £££, it was freecycle - just the feeling of being ripped off.

Truestorypeeps · 18/02/2023 21:29

It does sound annoying and it's horrible that this person lied and took advantage of you to get it at a lower price, I'd be miffed too...unfortunately there's little you can do, so best to chalk it up to experience and let it go for the sake of your own mental health.

IAmAlreadyRegrettingMyGreyColourScheme · 18/02/2023 21:38

You're lovely but she's always going to be a knob.
Buy yourself something nice with the money & forget her.

Hankunamatata · 18/02/2023 21:42

I'd be making some comments if you can do that on the item

ireallycantthinkofaname · 18/02/2023 21:50

I would name & shame on FB etc or even post an advert on that site with screenshots of your messages - nothing against buying to sell per se but everything against lying/fake sob story.
Also happy to go and time waste if you'll provide a link lol 😈😁

SeriouslyLTB · 18/02/2023 21:51

Really annoying. Perhaps it just didn’t fit?

I was being super indecisive about my wedding outfit. Bought one as a “back up”. Sold it to a very nice lady. It didn’t fit her and she relisted it for £100 more the same day.

Starlitestarbright · 18/02/2023 21:52

Maybe she tried it on and it didn't fit or didn't like the style op. Unfortunately there's not alot you can do. Second hand dresses lose alot of their value regardless if there have tags on.

BankOfDave · 18/02/2023 21:54

That’s not great OP, can understand you are upset.

My thoughts are with everything you’ve been through that dress wasn’t mean to be. Put it behind you - opportunity for a fresh start/dress all in good time.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 18/02/2023 21:56

It’s not you it’s her

Oysterbabe · 18/02/2023 21:57

Same thing happened to me with a bike. Some guy came to look at it, jiggled bits and pointed out how ropey it was, implied I'd wasted his time driving out, gave me some story about his wife desperately needing one to get to work, pressured me into selling it for peanuts. It was on Gumtree the next day for 4 times the price he'd paid.

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/02/2023 21:57

Ugh.

Legally, she's done nothing wrong, it's now hers, she can sell it for whatever she can get for it.

In some circles haggling and 'oh no, no I couldn't possibly stretch to xxx I've only got this on me' is standard practice..

But, morally, yeah shes a shithead and I would at least try to see if theres a way you can let others know shes a lying twat!

George4567 · 18/02/2023 22:04

In the 80's my mum and my aunty did their first car boot sale. They were selling a vast number of Catherine Cookson type books. A man came and said his terminally ill wife loved those books. They gave them all to him. Later that morning they found him around the corner selling them all. People are horrid.

JMSA · 18/02/2023 22:06

Fucking bitch!!! Angry
Flowers

Puppylucky · 18/02/2023 22:08

This happened to me on eBay / Vinted (sold on eBay saw item for resale on G on Vinted a week later and yes it's very irritating!

NellyIrrelephant · 18/02/2023 22:17

This is so low that she would lie like that.

What was the make of the dress?

Are we related? See my reply above !

Ellmau · 18/02/2023 22:28

She may well not get anyone to pay that amount.

Fingers crossed 🤞

TuesdayJulyNever · 18/02/2023 22:56

Are the initial messages you post on that site visible to other users? I’d be tempted to post something like “ah sorry the dress didn’t fit you hun. I’d be happy to refund you the £xx you paid me for it seeing as you’re a new mum and so tight for money. What a pity it didn’t work out for you.”

You don’t have to follow through, but it’s a warning to others that she’s a scammer.

I think you should be really proud that you haggled her up from 70% off and held your own! Hopefully all your bad luck is gone with it.

MrsMikeDrop · 18/02/2023 22:58

Oh that's so stink, well let's hope karma sorts that one out ☹️
