According to my rowing machine I only burn 20 calories per 15 minutes.

Myfitnesspal says I've burned 10 calories after 10,000 steps.

Is this right?

10 calories after walking 10,000 steps? No, that isn't right. Are you sure MFP isn't deducting the calories consumed?

Whowaswotsit · 18/02/2023 16:37

Check how much it thinks you weigh.

my fit bit totally overestimates mine. Apparently they can bs out by 40%

Roominmyhouse · 18/02/2023 16:39

What are you using to track your calorie burn?

roundavo · 18/02/2023 16:41

I'm just using the app for steps and the monitor on my rowing machine for that. Maybe they're wrong 😑 it's just very demotivating!

Don’t input exercise into MFP, it’s never right and means you end up eating calories back. Just use it for calorie tracking. You know you are exercising for your fitness, weight loss is mostly diet, not exercise.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/02/2023 16:42

Definitely not.

With the rowing machine you would nearly need not to moving it to only burn 20 cals in 15 minutes.

Working hard & depending on fitness / weight, you would burn 20 cals in a couple of minutes max

A 10 stone (63.5 kg) person walking at a "normal" pace (around 1.5 metres per second) will burn around 4.5 calories per minute.

10,000 steps is about a distance of 8000 metres (a step is about 80 cm) so at 1.5 metres per second, this would take 5333 seconds or 88.9 minutes.

88.9 x 4.5 calories = 400 calories.

If your mass is bigger you will burn more calories.

On a rowing machine, a 10 stone person will burn around 120 calories in 15 minutes with "moderate" effort.

Most calorie measurement tools are fairly inaccurate, you can get a fitbit or equivalent to help getting an overall idea of you total daily calorie burn but remember not to consume too many extra calories as they can still be quite far out

That's really helpful, thank you. I wonder why my machine is so out. It's brand new.

Calorie burning trackers are notorious for being inaccurate and unreliable. You really should not base all of your workout hopes on the calories burnt. Just stick to calorie counting and ignore how much you burn. Exercise should be about fitness not how many calories you burn.

eurochick · 18/02/2023 17:42

Has the rowing machine been set up correctly? You usually need to enter a profile with weight, etc when you start and it works out your calorie burn based on that.

No, it shouldn't really need that to be reasonably accurate, though you can

I agree though, it's definitely a set up issue in some way.
