To ask when you brush your teeth in the morning?

My DH has an odd ( to me) view on dental habits. He thinks it's best to brush your teeth before breakfast. I'm firmly of the after breakfast and before - you-leave- the- house camp. So what do you do ?.

YABU - Yes I brush them when I get up, before breakfast

YANBU - yes I brush them after breakfast

Thanks folk

Wow, I must have missed something. I've never brushed my teeth in the morning. Only before bed (and sometimes before going out in an evening if it's special or I might be in close proximity to people, or just before I go to the dentist.)

This cannot be true.

Does your mouth not feel full of bacteria / morning breath in the morning?!

Favouritefruits · 18/02/2023 15:28

@ShinyMe really? It even says on the back on toothpaste to brush twice a day. How do you get rid of your morning breath?

You're kidding right? You've never heard to brush your teeth twice a day? Do you go to a dentist? It's the first thing mine asks me before I open my mouth.

noworklifebalance · 18/02/2023 15:31

Before, because it was what I was brought up doing. Fortunately, it turns out that is what dentists advice. I would find it hard to change a habit of a lifetime if the advice had been the other way.
Dentists also say not to rinse your mouth out after brushing - we have brought up our children to do this but I just can’t do it myself as it feels odd.

ShinyMe · 18/02/2023 15:33

I do know people brush their teeth twice a day, but I never have. My parents don't. I'm 50 and have all my own teeth, no fillings, no issues. My dentist says my teeth are in excellent condition and that whatever I'm doing, it's working, so I've stuck to night time only. I don't floss either, sorry! I've been assured my breath is fine. Maybe I have a freakily healthy mouth.

MarshaMelrose · 18/02/2023 15:33

You should brush after breakfast. Acidity in your breakfast softens your teeth enamel. You should wait for it to remunerative before brushing. So no brushing til 30 minutes after eating.

Oysterbabe · 18/02/2023 15:35

DH brushes them as the last thing he does before leaving the house always and it actually drives me mad. I come down from my shower ready to go. We all end up sat around waiting for him while he goes and gets ready for a second time before we leave.

This is correct.

But I don’t stick to it, I tend to brush after as I can’t stand coffee breath. My teeth are rank too.

Brush before!

Remunerative?! What! Remineralise. Stupid autocorrect!

Squaffle · 18/02/2023 15:51

I brush after, I’m over 40 and have no fillings, never needed any dental work. Been flossing twice a day for about 2 years but never did it before that. The only reason I floss is because of the price of the hygienist: trying to stave off that cost for as long as poss!

taperjogger · 18/02/2023 16:04

My dentist has said brush first thing or 30-45 minutes after eating (similar reasons to previous poster) due to acid damaging enamel.

bepositive247 · 18/02/2023 16:21

Brush before breakfast and use a mouthwash after breakfast

JackiePlace · 18/02/2023 16:23

I used to be the same as you OP but then my dentist friend educated me.
I gather thinking in dentistry moves on, like other sciences.

Hatan · 18/02/2023 16:24

It's the first thing I do in the morning when I get up, would hate doing it after breakfast.

Confrontayshunme · 18/02/2023 16:25

My dentist told me to brush before food without rinsing my mouth and last thing before bed. It was hard to change, but I think it is better for enamel protection.

WeWereInParis · 18/02/2023 16:38

Depends. On a work day when I'm in a rush and eating breakfast as soon as I'm up, I brush my teeth afterwards as otherwise I have to eat breakfast with the taste of toothpaste in my mouth.
A weekend morning where I might potter about a bit before breakfast, I brush my teeth first thing.

mynewusername2023 · 18/02/2023 16:40

I hate the feeling of unbrushed teeth so do them as soon as I get up. If I'm at home I then normally do them again after breakfast (which is normally 1-2hrs after I get up). Then again before bed.

Frazzlefrazle · 18/02/2023 16:43

Same as most of commenters here, all 3 of our different dentist (difficult area for nhs dentists so we are all at different practices) have said to brush before breakfast. And obviously at night.

Ireallydohope · 18/02/2023 16:46

Dentist recommend to brush before breakfast

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/02/2023 16:53

I don't eat breakfast but I brush after my second coffee
If I did eat I'd brush afterwards otherwise food tastes funny

soboredtonight · 18/02/2023 16:55

With my dd right before we leave for the school run.

dementedpixie · 18/02/2023 16:58

It really doesn't matter
Sometimes it's before and sometimes it's after depending what day it is

BashfulClam · 18/02/2023 17:03

I always brush first thing. It’s better for your teeth. I always havechewing gum on the way to work, freshens my mouth and stimulates saliva to help my teeth.

Pseudonamed · 18/02/2023 17:51

I don't eat breakfast but I don't like coffee after brushing so I have both morning coffees and then brush.

TheGoogleMum · 18/02/2023 17:55

Depends how early I'm having breakfast and leaving the house. Weekdays I usually leave home before breakfast so brush first, weekend I usually have breakfast first
