To cancel the appointment because homeopathy is a load of crap?

I’ve had chronic health issues for years. These issues are getting worse and completely ruining my quality of life.
Despite lots of tests, consultant and GP appointments via the NHS, I am definitely getting worse not better.
I know and appreciate the NHS is on its knees but I am fed up waiting up to a year for consultation appointments, having them cancelled at last minute (one was even cancelled whilst I was in the hospital waiting room ffs!) and when I eventually get seen it is often a rushed 10 minute appointment. I am getting nowhere fast and pretty desperate right now despite investing so much in the hope of feeling well and trying many things myself. I don’t want to keep taking up NHS space when someone worse off than me needs the services, I would love to find someone out there who can help me heal.
I am contemplating turning to ‘alternative’ healthcare. I asked on my local town’s FB group for recommendations and several recommended a local homeopath.
I have had a 30 minute free call with her. She was so very lovely and for the first time I felt listened to and validated.
She explained how she had experience of my health issues herself and how homeopathy could indeed help me. She said that because my issues were long standing it would take some months to start to feel better.
So I have booked to go and see her in a month.
The consultation is £100 with the homeopathic tinctures being an additional £25 which she said would last about a month and I would probably need to see her for several months. Each follow up appointment will be £80 (probably every other month or so). She wasn’t pushy at all and it was left up to me to make any decisions.
I have told my dh and friends and they think it’s a utter waste of my money and homeopathy is nothing more than a placebo. They truly believe I will not get better via this route but am now having a wobble about it as it is a lot of money for me if it doesn’t help.
Of course if you look on the NHS website it will tell you much the same. But the NHS hasn’t been able to help me and I am now at a loss, stuck in limbo land and getting desperate.

What is everyone’s opinion or experience on homeopathy?
Should I pursue this route or cancel now?
I dare say that am going to get flamed on here. I know I am probably grasping at straws but I just want to feel better.

YABU - homeopathy is useless, you may as well throw the money down the drain don’t be so gullible!
YANBU - I believe in homeopathy, it works

I hope this link works- it explains everything you need to know about homeopathy

Brilliant!

IsThePopeCatholic · 18/02/2023 20:22

I used to take my daughter to the NHS Royal Homeopathic Hospital in London. She had terrible eczema which we struggled to control. The homeopathic ‘remedies’ made no difference at all. Our ‘consultant’ would consult a book of remedies, and asked questions such as ‘do you like thunderstorms’? He was a very overweight man with terrible skin - and certainly didn’t inspire confidence. It’s now closed down.

HowdoIgetbacktothe80s · 18/02/2023 15:08

Thank you ChateauMargaux I suppose I have nothing to lose by purchasing some homeopathic remedies and trying them, it’ll be cheaper than giving the homeopath £300

I am not sure you will get the same result on such a complex set of symptoms, trying remedies on your own. Many homeopathy colleges offer student clinics supervised by their tutors at much lower rates, the one I trained at charges £25 per session.

PlusLaMeme · 18/02/2023 21:14

The most irritating thing is when some people conflate homeopathy with naturopathic or herbal medicine practices, the latter of which is ancient. You can't argue with someone who refuses to listen though

MissTrip82 · 18/02/2023 21:47

Anyone who practices outside of evidence is a fraud. They know it, and they prey on people. They’re not benign or well-meaning.

There is value in being heard and listened to. If that’s helpful to you then find someone who can do that who doesn’t make their living preying on desperate people knowing they can’t offer them genuine help.

KarmaStar · 18/02/2023 21:51

Don't give up on it from one bad experience.

DrNo007 · 18/02/2023 21:51

Homeopathy has worked brilliantly for me (for serious chronic conditions) and several of my friends as well as my DH.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 18/02/2023 21:56

I think it can work - does work for some people. DH is a scientist and he thinks it can work. It has been shown to work on dogs. Therefore I think it's worth a try.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 18/02/2023 22:08

@OMG12 i understood every word 🙄

HedwigIsMyDemon · 18/02/2023 22:10

@Pocketfullofdogtreats it has never been proved to work. I’m sure your scientist husband understands that anecdotes do not equal data. Only RCTs can prove whether something works - not “my husband’s friend’s cousin’s runny nose got better when he fell for the snake oil salesman”.

This.

Why do people not understand this/

Yabvu. As a friend of mine's coffee mug has it " nothing is as good as homeopathy"

Think about it...

HedwigIsMyDemon · 18/02/2023 22:53

I need that mug 😄

Got any data for that?

Thought not.

Well the scientist here probably doesn’t give a merry fuck if it produces scientific data or not - it works for him which is prob all he cares about.

I know you would love nothing more than to be able to reduce life to a bunch of numbers but sometimes life only really cares about is 1.

LuckyStone · 18/02/2023 23:02

All you narrow minded numpties deserve your rubbish NHS to be honest

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 18/02/2023 23:02

@HedwigIsMyDemon @AnnoyedwithGossips Just because something appears to be absurd, doesn't mean it can't work.

SultanOfSwing · 18/02/2023 23:03

The placebo effect is very powerful.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 18/02/2023 23:05

@Pocketfullofdogtreats oh dear god that is not how science works 😩.

flawless29 · 18/02/2023 23:28

Look who's here, the whole homeopathic army! Busy bashing modern medicine, the same one keeping them alive. I guess gratitude isn't listed in the side effects of their sugar pills

I’ve been seeing a homeopath for my chronic health condition since 2015 and it’s helped me a great deal. I use it for acute issues for our family - it works really well for us all. Conventional medicine in the U.K. laughs at me. German doctors recommend it. Why don’t you try it? It’s worth a try 🙏

This!

There is a reason why homeopathy is still around after so many years (decades even). I've never had the need to use it but know very many people who've sworn by it.

I wouldn't disregard it instantly OP. Try it for a while and see how it goes. Good luck.

Pricklyheath · 19/02/2023 02:39

@HowdoIgetbacktothe80s you say you don’t have time to discuss all your issues with your gp.
Have you considered using the money that would have been spent on homeopathy on a private gp appointment?
It may be worth considering.

DemiColon · 19/02/2023 03:32

I think some alternative therapies can be quite effective, not all treatments are easy to measure and some aren't because they don't offer good financial returns.

But homeopathy doesn't make sense and there isn't evidence that it works - and it is not something that should be difficult to measure.

I'd be looking for stuff outside of the NHS for sure, but maybe not from a homeopath.

ButterBastardBeans · 19/02/2023 07:11

Actually a PP had hit on something I had forgotten. Am ex of mine developed an ulcerated colon and was prescribed steroid enemas. He hadn't worked for a year and was skeletal. He went to a Chinese Medicine practitioner and used the bags of stuff exactly as told. Within six months he was back at work but he had almost immediate relief from the pain too.
