WIBU to go to A&E?

Hi,

I woke up in the early hours a couple of days ago (2 week old newborn!) with a sharp pain in my shoulder when I rolled onto that side. It seemed manageable throughout the day though.
Yesterday, I woke up in excruciating pain with it - my DH had to manoeuvre me out of bed as even sitting up was sickeningly painful. All day I had horrendous pain in that shoulder which was also in my chest when I tried to take anything other than a shallow breath. It was there constantly even when I was just sitting. It started going across my back too and is like a shooting, stabbing pain.
It brought me to tears many a time and physically stopped me from eating or moving at times as swallowing seemed to make it worse. I’ve given birth twice with no pain relief and that was nothing compared to this.

Any sneezes, sniffs etc caused an extra stab of pain and it was impossible for me to hold my newborn as it felt like my chest was going to cave in and I panicked feeling like I couldn’t breathe. She’s been really unsettled from last night into this morning and it’s incredibly distressing because I physically can’t do anything to comfort her. DH is trying but he’s just getting increasingly frustrated - there’s lots of swearing and he’s saying he can’t look after me or get on with anything else he needs to and voicing his frustration that I need to do something.

I’ve tried strong painkillers but nothing makes any difference. I can’t get comfortable in any position and today it’s still no better. It feels like it’s moving into the side of my breast now as well and painful to stand up straight.
I did ring 111 yesterday, explained how painful it was but they just told me they were referring me to a pharmacy and put it down as referral for shoulder pain. The pharmacy rang me and just told me there’s nothing they can do as they can’t give me anything stronger than what I’ve already had.

I’m well aware the NHS is under strain and don’t want to be one of those people that just waste everyone’s time when there’s people that seriously need them. I don’t understand what they could do for me or what’s causing this but at the same time, can’t continue in this pain.
We have a walk in centre near us but there’s no facilities there so I don’t know what they could do. I physically can’t move or care for my 2 children (have a 2 year old too) without excruciating pain and can’t go on feeling like this. WIBU to go and sit in A&E to try and get seen?

111are not fit for purpose -the call handler works to a protocol and has minimal qualifications -so glad you went to A and E.

bringbacksideburns · 19/02/2023 18:38

Read the damn thread first!!!!

Ailsamary · 19/02/2023 18:39

I am so glad you went. A&E .ay be ridiculously busy but it is easy to rule out a couple of the more simple things quickly, and if it had been muscular then only your time was wasted.
HOWEVER by going you saved your life, I am so glad you ignored those that told you not to go.

And as I was an A&E nurse from since before you were born I know what I am talking about. They would much rather check you out than not. Those that need seen quickly generally tend to be, yes people may be missed and those are horrible. but lives ARE saved (again experience).

111 unfortunately have to follow flow charts and sometimes something may be missed. In that immediate time you may have missed telling them something that would have gone down a different pathway,

Sussex49 · 19/02/2023 18:43

You mustn’t feel guilty. I hope you do go to A&E and that you are seen quickly. I wouldn’t rely on 111. I hope you get better soon. X

Miisty · 19/02/2023 18:45

Please go to A and E so if my past midwifery patients would phone up for advice and I would tell them A and E for your heath get better soon

CustardySergeant · 19/02/2023 18:53

SHE WENT TO A&E YESTERDAY.

IF YOU CAN'T RTFT AT LEAST READ ALL THE OP'S POSTS.

hyder · 19/02/2023 18:54

I could have written this... ended up calling maternity unit as i suspected it was trapped wind i had heard about after c secfion. They wanted to see me as they suspected blood clot. I spent 3 weeks in hospital, had every test under the sun. The pain was manageable only in those first few days with morphine but by the time I went home I was on oral pain killers, still stronger than over the counter though. I got no answers, still don't know what I was. It gives me the fear wondering what it was.
I would phone the maternity unit

Happykittyy · 19/02/2023 17:30

I think I know what you have. It's horrifically painful. I had it - a calcium deposit in the shoulder tendon. Check out on Insta shoulder doctor - and you'll see what I'm referring to.

What? As well as the blood clot and chest infection she's already been diagnosed with?! How terribly unlucky.

halloumi1 · 18/02/2023 22:52

@Singularity82 Thank you, lots of rest needed I think!

@Beseen22 Thank you. The Dr hasn’t told me, just that I will need to get further medication from my GP so I will ask them when I contact them on Monday. I’m just at an out of hours pharmacy now picking up the blood clot medication. My maternal grandad had to be on Warfarin for life after a DVT and then further PE.

I’ve had over 10 lots of blood clots all over my body

they'll most likely give you clexane or warferin and then monitor it

id you have more you’ll see someone but highly unlikely now

friend had a stroke and still hasn’t seen anyone.

they’ll make sure you’re off birth control and all that and you’ll have to be aware if you fly or do long drives. But that’s it really.

halloumi1 · 19/02/2023 19:08

Thanks for taking time to comment but just to recap for those who haven’t RTFT!

Thank you also for those sending get well wishes, very kind of you and really appreciated right now.

Diagnosed with blood clot and chest infection after going to A&E - bloods, x-ray, ECG and CT scan. Discharged with medication to follow up with dr and recovering at home. Still in a lot of pain and have very sore arms after the cannula and lots of attempts for blood but just thankful to everyone here for raising the PE and spurring me to get seen.

Hope you start to feel better soon 💐

Fluff3 · 19/02/2023 19:14

Please go to A and E, sounds like a PE to me.

Elfblossom · 19/02/2023 19:14

First of all, glad you went to A&E & look to be on the right path, my daughter suffered an ischemic (blood clot) stroke at age 13. I'm relieved for you that it was found and treated.

I just wanted to add (don't know if anyone else has commented similar, not read entire thread but ... ) it made feel instantly annoyed on your behalf that your partner was irritated by your being unwell, instantly livid ...

And then, I pondered that, he's a Dad with a new baby and a toddler and a partner who is in pain and he's clearly struggling to deal with all these things that he's not used to dealing with.

So my (albeit unsolicited) advice is to tell him that swearing at you isn't especially helpful in any situation and if it happens again a perimenopausal mum is going to cone and kick his arse and then also give him a hug and say I know it's hard and you too, Dad can ask for support if you're struggling.

Congratulations on new baby, hope you can enjoy them now xx

Atsocta · 19/02/2023 19:18

AdobeWanKenobi · 19/02/2023 17:28

Yeah, that'll be it.
Well done.

Thank you x

I agree - get it checked a A&E. However it sounds like fibrositis ard.bmj.com/content/annrheumdis/2/2/101.full.pdf which is excruciatingly painful, like being stabbed in the chest/shoulder and renders you unable to take anything except a shallow breath. A hot water bottle can help and keep warm. It does eventually go, but if this is what you have, avoid drafts and car vents blowing cold.

What is sounds like is a blood clot and chest infection, seeing as the OP went to A&E and got this diagnosis yesterday.

8 pages in and OP started this yesterday, atleast read OPs updates

DaveGrohlsMrs · 19/02/2023 19:53

I don’t mean to belittle your symptoms as they sound horrendous, but I had terrible pain in my shoulder and chest after giving birth via c-section and it turned out just to be trapped wind because during the section they pump you full of gas! It was excruciatingly painful but ultimately nothing. But you should get it checked out just to put your mind at rest.

Weedoormatnomore · 19/02/2023 19:55

Have hospital not got you booked back in for a 2nd scan ? to check the blood clot has gone. They did with my DH after giving him medication to get rid of it.

DaveGrohlsMrs · 19/02/2023 19:57

Apologies OP, I hadn’t RTFT! 🤦🏻‍♀️ So glad you got checked out. Hope you manage to rest as much as possible and feel better soon.x

cathcath2 · 19/02/2023 20:06

I am so glad you went to A&E and you now have the blood thinners and antibiotics you need. Get well soon

Lmgify · 19/02/2023 20:34

Glad you went to A&E and got the PE diagnosed. I had PE in my second pregnancy and it was horrendous, it will take a little while to feel better. Hope your husband is being more helpful now and hope you’re enjoying your new bundle of joy xx

PepperRed · 19/02/2023 20:38
