Hi,

I woke up in the early hours a couple of days ago (2 week old newborn!) with a sharp pain in my shoulder when I rolled onto that side. It seemed manageable throughout the day though.
Yesterday, I woke up in excruciating pain with it - my DH had to manoeuvre me out of bed as even sitting up was sickeningly painful. All day I had horrendous pain in that shoulder which was also in my chest when I tried to take anything other than a shallow breath. It was there constantly even when I was just sitting. It started going across my back too and is like a shooting, stabbing pain.
It brought me to tears many a time and physically stopped me from eating or moving at times as swallowing seemed to make it worse. I’ve given birth twice with no pain relief and that was nothing compared to this.

Any sneezes, sniffs etc caused an extra stab of pain and it was impossible for me to hold my newborn as it felt like my chest was going to cave in and I panicked feeling like I couldn’t breathe. She’s been really unsettled from last night into this morning and it’s incredibly distressing because I physically can’t do anything to comfort her. DH is trying but he’s just getting increasingly frustrated - there’s lots of swearing and he’s saying he can’t look after me or get on with anything else he needs to and voicing his frustration that I need to do something.

I’ve tried strong painkillers but nothing makes any difference. I can’t get comfortable in any position and today it’s still no better. It feels like it’s moving into the side of my breast now as well and painful to stand up straight.
I did ring 111 yesterday, explained how painful it was but they just told me they were referring me to a pharmacy and put it down as referral for shoulder pain. The pharmacy rang me and just told me there’s nothing they can do as they can’t give me anything stronger than what I’ve already had.

I’m well aware the NHS is under strain and don’t want to be one of those people that just waste everyone’s time when there’s people that seriously need them. I don’t understand what they could do for me or what’s causing this but at the same time, can’t continue in this pain.
We have a walk in centre near us but there’s no facilities there so I don’t know what they could do. I physically can’t move or care for my 2 children (have a 2 year old too) without excruciating pain and can’t go on feeling like this. WIBU to go and sit in A&E to try and get seen?

Please go to A&E, it could be a pulmonary embolism, particularly if you had a C-Section. There is high risk of this.

ArabellaScott · 18/02/2023 18:17

Thank goodness you went to A&E. Take care, and hope all is sorted soon.

Sorry I have now read that you’ve gone to A&E and are being treated. I rushed to respond before reading all your updates as was worried. Hope you are feeling better soon and back to newborn snuggles 💕

Itsokay2020 · 18/02/2023 18:52

They are sending you home with a suspected blood clot? Seriously? I had this 13 months after my DC was born, it was a PE. Elevated D-dimer, immediately admitted to a ward and four days later it was confirmed via a CT scan with contrast dye. They wanted me to stay in longer, but I discharged myself because I missed my baby. However, the Clexane injections, then six months of Warfarin really knocked me sideways. Unless things have moved on considerably in 13 years, I wouldn’t be happy going home! You are high risk, you need to rest and ought to be closely monitored. Given your DH’s attitude so far, I’d be asking (demanding!) to be admitted! Thinking of you OP, it’s an awful feeling and you have my utmost sympathy 💐

Ostryga · 18/02/2023 18:52

Thank god you went in. Hope you’re feeling better asap.

I would query going home with just a blood thinner injection, the risk of stroke is huge even with medication so it would be best if you can stay in just in case. They will want to turf you out due to lacking beds so you may need to be quite assertive. And better to be safe than sorry.

letthemalldoone · 18/02/2023 19:13

Hope you get the best of care @halloumi1. When the medics have treated your symptoms, please ask a member of staff to apply a good hard kick to your DH's arse!! He's the father of two children now and you and they are his priority no matter what else he thinks he has to do. Selfish plank, and you in so much pain two weeks after giving birth?!

Hope you feel better soon, and let him know in no uncertain terms that he has to buck up his ideas! x

ThisMustBeMyDream · 18/02/2023 19:17

I'm glad you went in OP. 111 need some feedback once you've got a full diagnosis.

To the other midwives posting - I'm also a midwife, our maternity triage would not have seen her for this, as it is medical. I have worked in multiple trusts and none would see her on triage, but advise to go straight to a&e. I'm surprised to see that other trusts would. You learn something new every day in this job 🤣.

Tonkerbea · 18/02/2023 19:25

Glad you're being treated OP. Focus on getting better, and when you're back to full strength, have a think about whether your 'D'H 's twatty behaviour is part of a pattern. Big red flag not putting your health above his convenience.

MummaofWA · 18/02/2023 19:32

I had a PE post C-section. Shortness of breath and pain in calf but no swelling. Thankfully I knew the signs and was already at the hospital (my son was in NICU) but it was a tough time. Recovered quickly with treatment and 6 months on warfarin. Thank goodness you went in. Speedy recovery, you’re in the best place.
If you’re breastfeeding, ask the maternity ward to bring you a breast pump so you can keep your milk flow. I was determined to keep my milk for my poorly baby and thankfully was able to.

OldFan · 18/02/2023 19:33

Sounds like you made the right call as it was potentally dodgy.

Feel better soon @halloumi1 x

halloumi1 · 18/02/2023 17:30

Thanks again everyone - your lovely comments and help have cheered me up spending the day away from my baby.
It is my left shoulder.

My bloods came back with an high inflammatory marker. I’ve had a chest x Ray and they’re suspecting blood clot.
I’ve got to wait to be injected with a blood thinner and come back tomorrow morning too to a different department.

Sorry. You’ll prob be in pain for few days/week whilst blood thinner kicks in.
pain killers and rest!

Sharp pain in your shoulder and chest area and hurts when you breathe. Absolutely go to a&e.

Why? Sounds like a pulled muscle to me

justasking111 · 18/02/2023 19:50

Just seen this thread read OP post and thought PE. It's worrying that many of us did but 111 didn't

MyCatIsAnnoyinglyCute · 18/02/2023 19:52

Why? Sounds like a pulled muscle to me

Except it isn’t.

letthemalldoone · 18/02/2023 19:57

MissMaple82 · 18/02/2023 19:45

Helpful.... NOT!!!

Maybe RTFT before you make stupid comments...

VaccineSticker · 18/02/2023 19:58

Another catastrophic 111 fail.
glad you are being treated OP. X

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 18/02/2023 19:59

I had this recently and it was a pulmonary embolism. I hope you’re being checked out and treated

iamyourequal · 18/02/2023 19:59

Thank goodness you are in A&E. When I had your symptoms it was an ectopic pregnancy at critical stage and I was operated on as an emergency that day. The shoulder pain was excruciating and it’s deferred pain, in my case from bleeding at the ectopic. I know you don’t have an ectopic but I am just posting to explain the deferred pain. I didn’t know about this until it was me. Hope they get you sorted soon.

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 18/02/2023 20:01

I’m missy on a CT scan. My chest X-ray was clear and they let me go home as long as I came back the next day. When I had the ct scan I was straight away admitted and not allowed to leave my bed even for the loo!

I had 2 anticoagulant injections and am now on tablets for 6 months.

iamyourequal · 18/02/2023 20:01

@MissMaple82 I am guessing you must be a troll as nobody could be as staggeringly stupid as your post suggests.

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 18/02/2023 20:01

That’s meant to say insist on a CT scan

Hollywolly1 · 18/02/2023 20:04

I am so delighted you went in and I hope you are well enough to go home to your new born baby soon,🌻❤️

strawberry2017 · 18/02/2023 20:07

I hope your husband has become more sympathetic towards you.

GirlOfTudor · 18/02/2023 20:19

I hope you're doing okay and I'm so glad you went to a&e!

If anyone else is reading this thread and is unsure about whether to go to a&e themselves... Remember to base your decision on how YOU feel and not how strained the NHS is. If you feel you need urgent care immediately, just go. Especially if you've had a baby extremely recently. It puts you in a higher risk category. The hospital will triage you accordingly.

amonsteronthehill · 18/02/2023 20:42

Relieved you went in and glad they're on it.
