Autism

I know there are many threads concerning this subject, I've just read one now.
I have a son with severe autism, limited communication and obvious learning disabilities, aibu to think the diagnosis/description should be changed for high functioning people, as opposed to those who have serious disabilities.

But you aren’t medium functioning. You are demonstrably High Functioning. Do you mean that you have a lower than average IQ but not a LD?

*The >70 or <70 IQ categorization refers to the old grouping of Aspergers vs Autism.^
No this is incorrect.

They were subcategories of the diagnosis of AUTISM. LFA IQ less than 70. HFA IQ above 70.

ALL Aspergics are High Functioning.

Did you have a language delay as a toddler @fluffyoverlord ?

JustKeepBuilding · 22/02/2023 00:10

Your posts referred to functioning which in the sense of describing autism relates to IQ. That’s not the same thing as the levels in the DSM5, which aren’t actually called high, medium or low functioning anyway. High or low functioning is about IQ being above or below 70.

The UK mostly doesn’t use the levels as the ICD is mostly used, not the DSM.

If course I ‘quibble’ ignorant posts like yours.

If you supposedly have so many friends who agree with you why don’t you make your own group.

You are, of course, free to use whatever description you like, just as others are free to correct your incorrect use of functioning labels.

Level 2 is medium functioning.

No it isn’t. The levels used in the DSM aren’t functioning labels.

Itisbetter · 22/02/2023 00:24

You are inventing your own terminology or rather redefining existing terminology. It’s extremely difficult to discuss anything if you morph every idea and word.

JustKeepBuilding · 22/02/2023 00:26

Yes, I did raise IQ because you used functioning labels and functioning labels are based on IQ. So no not irrelevant.

Plain English would express clearly what you meant. Inventing your own terminology doesn’t do that. You are dictating to others both more and less impacted by disability than you. How are you different than the autistics you so dislike?

JustKeepBuilding · 22/02/2023 00:32

If you don’t want people thinking you mean something else you shouldn’t use terminology that means something else in relation to autism diagnosis.

There are many non-parents on MN.

So ignorant.

It’s not me dictating to you, it is a suggestion if you want people to understand what you mean.

Read the thread again, there’s several posters who either fall into that category themselves or have DC in that category including my DS3.

Spendonsend · 22/02/2023 06:43

@Cuckoosheep - yes I think if he had the right support for the autism at an earlier stage he would have had much less anxiety . He is impacted by the autism itself now and I remember his new school saying 'now the anxiety has reduced we can see the autism'. I think what i was trying to say was if we treat anxiety without supporting autism it doesnt work as its the triad of impairments that cause it, not a external event like trying to deal with the LA which is what causes my anxiety!

Thank you for celebrating his parallel play. Not everyone gets that.
