To wonder if Lilo and Stitch is a working class Disney film?

I mean why is there so much Lilo and Stitch merch in Primark and Asda? I'm working on the assumption that they make it because their shoppers want it and as they have a mostly working class customer base what's the deal here? Lilo and Stitch is from the 90s so why all the merch now? I saw a Lilo and Stitch chopping board in Asda today.

really?

gwenneh · 17/02/2023 22:46

Lilo and Stitch is from the 90s so why all the merch now?
Because Disney's marketing team understands the demographic that liked the film as children now have the highest amount of disposable income and license the characters out at the appropriate time.

KarmaStar · 17/02/2023 22:46

This comes across as being slightly goading and snobbish.
I'm sure that was not your intention op.
And does it really matter ?

MonkeyPuddle · 17/02/2023 22:46

Fucking hell, I didn’t realise. My mam was a single mam, best off and boot down to Asda to get a fleecey blanket. God bless the DWP.

ODFOD

Rowthe · 17/02/2023 22:48

Lilo and stitch was boring.

I wouldn't be buying any of that merch for my kids.

ghostyslovesheets · 17/02/2023 22:49

Disney have a whole RANGE in both stores - better run off and find more middle class films to watch OP or you might catch common!

WordtoYoMumma · 17/02/2023 22:49

Stitch merch is also huge in Disneyland Paris. I don't think that's aimed at working class families...

Powersout · 17/02/2023 22:51

Nah but is AIBU about what really matters? It just got me wondering.

Lilo and stitch was released in 2002/3 so maybe it's to celebrate the 20th year of its release?

tabulahrasa · 17/02/2023 22:51

It was released in 2002... so all the people that watched it as kids are now in their twenties, bang on disposable income because no commitments yet age.

It’s just marketing, in ten years frozen stuff will come back out.

xsquared · 17/02/2023 22:52

Is this a parody thread about MN's obsession with class and Disney?

Windbeneathmybingowings · 17/02/2023 22:52

Stitch is just cute, that’s why. He’s like the male version of the other one you see all the time - Marie from Aristocats.

Powersout · 17/02/2023 22:53

Oh I'm working class myself. But don't have a love for Lilo and Stitch. Previous poster is right - maybe if I was 10 years younger...

Lilo and Stitch has always sold a huge amount of merchandise since it came out in the early 2000s. I know someone who is a collector of all things Stitch. It’s not really my thing but there’s a market for it, like a lot of Disney properties. Primark rotate through various Disney movie themed stuff, they have a big contract with Disney. A couple of years back it was beauty and the beast, now it’s the turn of Lilo and Stitch. Disney sells.

KinderCat · 17/02/2023 22:54

Asda have also had star wars, Alice in wonderland, winnie the pooh, bambi and aristrocats ranges among others and Primark has had a host of most characters. I think you are reading too much into and making rather harsh judgements. Lilo and Stitch is having rather a resurgence in popularity (one of several characters who made it into Disney's latest gaming franchise if kids I work with are to be believed) and since people are buying into the family motif (I think the people liking Moana and feeling a similar vibe also helped).

QueSyrahSyrah · 17/02/2023 22:56

Yeah you've nailed it OP. Meanwhile if you go to Selfridges or Harrods it's wall to wall Monsters Inc, what with that being the upper class Disney movie of choice 🙄

Or the PP is correct and kids who were 6 when it came out in 2002 are nearly 30 now and likely having kids of their own to buy stuff for.

Plus Stitch is cute, obviously.

Loopylands · 17/02/2023 22:56

I’ve never seen this film and don’t shop in Primark however I know Asda had a whole range of Disney products. I’ve seen frozen, the lion king and monkey / Minnie Mouse in there along with Disney princess dresses etc.

Loopylands · 17/02/2023 22:57

that was meant to say mickey not monkey mouse!

nicetoseetgesunsout · 17/02/2023 22:58

Exactly what @gwenneh said. My daughter loved the film as a child. Saw the show at Disney. She Was 24 last week and amongst her gifts I got her the soft toys, keyring and lounge suit, but none from primark (eBay). She has far, far more disposable income than I do.

Sometimeswinning · 17/02/2023 22:59

It's a trend. Could be tiktok etc. I know my dds group were dressing up for Halloween as lilo and stitch.
