Scammers using my address. What to do?

SCAMMERUSINGMYADDRESS · 17/02/2023 18:15

People keep turning up at my home to collect things they've bought, or put a deposit on. It's happening nearly every day and is sometimes really unpleasant. They've often driven for several hours, they're annoyed they've had their time wasted and been scammed. I feel so sorry for anyone scammed. I've seen some of the messages they've had and the scammers just seem very convincing.

The scammers are using fake Facebook accounts, each selling a different type of thing, all costing in the 1000s.

I logged it online, then I called the police on 101 and they said to call Action Fraud.

I've reported through Action Fraud and the woman didn't want any of the information as she said investigators would ask for it when they get in contact. She was a bit vague about what would happen next, then almost immediately, I got an email saying that it would not be pursued, thanking me for contacting them and saying:
"Information reports are utilised to enrich the overall intelligence picture which assists with the formulation and refinement of prevention strategies."
-whatever that means.

There's probably not much I can do to stop them and I know they could be anywhere in the world.

Anyone else had this and anyone got any suggestions?

Have you tried reporting the accounts to Facebook?

Forestwalks · 17/02/2023 18:26

we had something very similar happen a few months back.
We ended up putting a note on our front door with a short explanation of what was happening and that the police were involved. Any one who did knock after reading the note were a lot more polite.

We also found out from a few people who turned up where they had seen the advertisements some were Facebook and others eBay we found the ads and messaged them and told them to stop using our address as the police were involved. Many of the accounts got taken down within a few days and thankfully we have had no one turn up for nearly 2 months.

I'd be encouraging the people who have been scammed to report it to the police and keep at the police until they catch the scammer.

Grizzledstrawberry · 17/02/2023 18:43

Put a note on the door telling the people to report it to police and to whichever site they was using too, surely the more reports they get the more likely they are to do something about it, id also consider putting up a camera/alarm system to protect yourself incase anyone gets aggressive.

All the people scammed need to make reports. There's no much you can do.

Police aren't always interested. My brothers ex had her name and address used by next door neighbour who intercepted parcel. They were told it wasn't her being scammed it was the company she was ordering from. So unless they reported it nothing would happen

JustDrama · 17/02/2023 18:48

Everyone who turns up needs to be told to report to action fraud saving all communications from the seller and if possibly the URL link to the offending account. It's not your report they can do anything with, it's the people who are the buyers that action fraud need to hear from.

ChickenDhansak82 · 17/02/2023 18:56

Just put a message on your front door saying you are not selling anything on Facebook/eBay, your address has been used by scammers taking deposits for items that do not exist, and if anyone has paid a deposit and been sent to this address, they need to screenshot then report the Facebook profile, warn others of the fake profile, and report it to action fraud.

State you have notified the police, but as it is not you being scammed the police won't do anything.

No doubt they will still knock, but at least then they will know it's a scam before knocking.

They won't do anything. Facebook relies on algorithms to moderate.

Facebook is absolutely crawling with scams. An attraction put up a message to say that they'd had a glitch on their website, and that people were welcome to pay on the gate when they arrived, they weren't sold out. Within minutes there were a dozen comments from bots claiming to have spare tickets people could buy. Being community-minded I reported them to Facebook. Did they take them down? Did they fairycakes. Apparently trying to con people out of their money is not in contravention of Facebook's "Community Standards".

The police do not care about you or your welfare. Just getting that in early to manage any expectations you may have of help from them.

That's awful, it must make you wonder why you bother trying to do the right thing. Sad
