Extend by ONLY 1.2metres ?!?

so Our kitchen is very small . 2.6m by 2.2.

I want to extend 1. Into the garage so that it wide enough to add some more units and give a bit more space.

I don’t want to eat into the garage any more than this as I want to leave side access to the garden.

to keep costs down I don’t want to extend out into the garden.

what does everyone think ? It is worth the hassle and cost for an extra 1.2m?

or AIBU?

thanks

For me it would depend on what the new kitchen plan looked like - what is the issue with your current kitchen space (eg storage, surface space, floor space) and what difference would the extra space mean?

CherLloydbyCherLloyd · 16/02/2023 21:42

We also have a small kitchen - ours is longer than yours, but narrower. So although it’s “small” we actually have enough storage and enough surface space. Our issue is a lack of floor space. So bear that in mind - if your extension made your kitchen longer but not wider, you might not feel the benefit if floor space is the issue -for example, if I’m in myself with my baby, there is barely space for the high chair on the floor width wise - I need to climb over it to pass - but there is plenty of space length wise.

Personally it doesn't sound worth it to me (I'm no expert though!) - is the wall you want to knock though a supporting wall? It may not be much cheaper than extending into the garden if it is....

Notatallanamechange · 16/02/2023 21:46

To me that would be the difference between basically people having to wait for someone to move out the way and being able to easily pass, when trying to get further in the room. Which, in my eyes, is worth it.

Walls are 30cm thick so are you extending 150 cm for a 120 additional space or 120 for a 90cm usable space? If the latter it won't be worth the money it will cost.

Could you rearrange your storage?
I have all food on shelves in the garage, together with the washer/dryer and small appliances. Kitchen has crockery and cookware.

Storage wise we are fine — it’s floor space we need.

it would add an extra 1.2m of floor space in width

im thinking of having a flat roof with multiple flat velux windows for light

We extended for 1.4m more space and it was worth it.

This sounds crazy but plot the size out in the garden. Obviously plot out the footprint of the units too.

I think worth it we went out 4 m total we did was huge 4m by 8m and tbh too much. I like your lighting idea too.

ohlalalalalalalalala · 16/02/2023 22:31

Instead of extending the kitchen into the garage could you steal some of the garage space for a utility room then you could get your washing machine in there and possibly fridge to free up space in the kitchen?

wibblywobblywoo · 17/02/2023 22:42

Not unreasonable at all, I'd do it. I'm sure there was an episode of LIOLI where the people extended by that amount and it was an amazing transformation.
