Unrealistic expectations of work?

Am I being unreasonable? I dream of having a job that I enjoy.

I work in public sector and the role can sometimes be fulfilling. However the people that work there can be fickle. Very micromanaging and nitpicking. Other times they’re fine and shower you with praise. It genuinely feels like a rollercoaster as sometimes you’re the hot topic of the month, and at other times you’re practically worthless and are treated as such. I’ve never really been happy with this job or proud of it. It has a poor reputation too.

is the grass greener in another job, or are all jobs like this? I’m not sure if I’m expecting too much. I feel flat and demotivated at all times. Even when I go the extra mile, it’s rarely recognised. Not much development either.

there is a specific management technique of knocking people down, then building them up again, reliant on approval

or managers are just idiots, probably happens just as often

When it comes to questions like this you have to go back to whatever it was you originally dreamed of becoming. Or something you yearn to do in your heart. Is that something you could make happen? It may be that the career that suits you is not an employed job but something completely different e.g. self employed, artist, writer.... not easy to change but until you give it a go you may never feel satisfied! Then again if you yearn to be in a new employed role, try to make it happen. It is true that the shine wanes on everything at some point. But I think too many people end up doing something they are less happy doing for the sake of paying the mortgage rather than doing their hearts desire.

No, this isn’t my desired career either. I wouldn’t mind the same department in a different role. But would it be the same dodgy management issues?

the issue in my company is that staff aren’t really trained up, eg managers who secured management roles, with no experience or training afterwards. So everyone is just winging it and there’s no efficiency in place.

I think it depends entirely on the company.

I've worked as a mechanical engineer for some amazing managers who were very supportive and encouraging. I've also worked for some absolute demotivating arse holes who were power hungry control freaks.

I love my teaching job but my boss has moments when she can be unbelievably rude to people. Possibly hormonal/menopause related...

A friend of mine worked for the council and absolutely HATED it. She said that it was full of so many jobsworths and jobs were split up into so many sections that the whole process became tedious. She couldn't just go sharpen a pencil. One person had to turn the sharpener on at the wall, one had to press the button etc... and if she dared do other peoples jobs then the bitching started!

I love my job and the company I work for (public sector). Great culture and my team all seem very happy!
