Unexpected downside of wfh

So I hybrid work which means majority of the time I'm working from home. This works brilliantly in terms of being able to do school drop off and back to.start work at 9.

Then can leave work at 5.55 and collect from.afterschool club at 6.

However, I'm off for half term.and desperate to not be in the house because I'm here so much working.

By contrast children are knackered from school and just want to hang around at home chilling out.

I'm ready to climb the walls.

Does anyone recognise this unexpected wfh side effect?

Of course we did lots of things, it's just the basic point that because I'm at home the majority of the time I'm desperate to leave it as much as possible.

Whereas the children are not in the house majority of the time and thus want to be at home, crafts, baking, playing with toys etc.

Whereas when I worked out of the home all of us were more happy to hang around at home.

I enjoy wfh more than I enjoyed going into an office everyday but there are aspects about office life that I miss.

I miss lunches and the ability to pop out to do a bit of shopping.

I also miss getting dressed up a bit on a regular basis. All my makeup seems to get old before I have a chance to use it up. I used to enjoy putting makeup on at the start of the day. I've loads of nice jewellery but hardly ever wear much of it.

I’m in the office 50% of the time which is a lovely mix really, I guess if I were in my spare room office every day I’d be sick of it but as it stands I think I have the perfect set up.
Dh often comes home mid morning and makes us both soup for lunch. I’m really diligent about getting out for a lunchtime walk when I’m wfh and also about going to my gym classes.
Last week I had a couple of days off for half term and ds and I really enjoyed chilling at home inbetween going out and doing a few nice things.

Also, I am lucky to have a small room at home I have dedicated as my office. However, the unexpected downside is that there is a room in my house that I point blank refuse to enter outside of working hours because it's like 'going to work' on my off time.

It's weird to go into that room for anything other than work and even seeing the door as I pass, often prompts me to think about work.

Think that I'm also realising that this particular mindset is a feature of having been doing 12 hour plus days for the past few months with no time for breaks or anything. So work is all consuming and thus want to escape it

too much of one thing is never good as the quote or saying goes.

That's why people were going crazy in lockdown being in one place all the time day in day out. Its not healthy and not very stimulating.

Is going away an option? We had a cottage for half term but knew the children needed to relax there as much as "do stuff" but for me it helped to be somewhere else to relax

Yes, but I'm on the side of your children! My DH works from home and just wants to get out at the weekend, whereas I'm out all week and just want to relax at home at the weekend.

Thankfully DH has a hobby that gets him out of the house some weekends as otherwise he's also climbing the walls, while I'm happy curled up on the sofa with a cuppa/glass of wine and a book!

The weekends where he isn't out we go out for a long walk one day and then relax the other so we both get what we want from a weekend!

BrieAndChilli · 21/02/2023 13:46

I have noticed this with DH. Me and the kids are out at school/work all week so on weekends we just want to chill a bit but because he has been home alone all week (although does go out doing scouts several evenings a week) ge wants to do something eg a long hike etc.

I used to WFH 4 days a week, and used my day off to leave the house all day. Shopping, walks, coffee out etc. I'd go mad sitting inside all week

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/02/2023 14:05

I have a good balance of WFH and office but I disagree with a PP about food - I'm much happier ordering in the ingredients for and then making a good sandwich / dhal / soup / whatever during my lunch break, rather than having to eat bought food every day. I tend to get a takeaway / buy from a particular cafe I like once a week or so.
