To think employers are taking the piss? Extended working hours.

Looking for a new job in admin.

Many jobs are being advertised with working hours of 8am-5pm, 9am-6pm, 8.30am-5pm or even 8am-6pm!

Where are all the 9-5s which you used to see?

Its not like the pay is higher for these jobs, it’s actually low in the region of £20-25k.

I though we worked the longest hours in Europe already!

AIBU to think this is a piss take?

I've always work 37.5

Lcb123 · 15/02/2023 16:26

7.5 hours a day (37.5 a week) is pretty standard so 9-5.30. I don’t think it’s unreasonable- they’re advertising those hours, not like telling you the hours have changed after you start.

Anotheanon · 15/02/2023 16:29

I’ve been in the civil service for many years and it has always been 37hpw not including lunch as lunch is unpaid.

Leakingtoilet · 15/02/2023 15:32

NHS is 8-4, 9-5 etc. Half hour unpaid lunch break. Full time 37.5 hours

Unpaid ?? I’m ashamed I didn’t know this about NHS jobs. Are nurses paid for their breaks ? (When they get them)

AngeloMysterioso · 15/02/2023 16:31

One of my first proper grad jobs (after a few years of dossing about and travelling) in 2010 was 8:30-6:30 as standard, and the presenteeism culture was such that you were generally expected to arrive early, leave late, and eat lunch whilst working at your desk. Otherwise you weren’t properly committed.

Another job I had a few years ago, I was expected to do a shitload of overtime but never paid for it. One month I did almost the equivalent of a full working week of unpaid overtime. That same month I was off sick for two days with a D&V bug, and my cuntish boss actually deducted two days’ pay from my wages.

I now have what I call a “job job” (as opposed to a “career” job) where I start and finish bang on time, overtime is not expected of us but if we do any we are paid for it. It’s low paid but stress free and so much better for my mental and physical health.

Lunch breaks are unpaid in pretty much all jobs. Paid working hours on a 9-5 day are usually 7 or 7.5, not 8.

Fleabigg · 15/02/2023 16:36

I’ve never had a job with a paid lunch break and I’m in my mid 30s. Agree those salaries sound low for the hours though.

Not just NHS, I’ve never had a paid lunch break in any job I’ve ever had.

gogohmm · 15/02/2023 16:40

I've never been paid for lunch, I think that's incredibly rare

Everyone in my office has an unpaid lunch break and I work in a law firm.

justadress · 15/02/2023 16:44

The majority of my colleagues work 7.30-6 with a 30 minute unpaid break. At least once a month they work 7.30-7, often a little later. Those in senior roles do this longer day 2-3 times a month.

KimberleyClark · 15/02/2023 16:44

Allblackeverythingalways · 15/02/2023 15:31

8.30-5 with an hour for lunch is 37.5 hours
Hardly extended and quite normal

No one actually took an hour for lunch where I used to work! 30 mins max.

Greblegable · 15/02/2023 16:47

I got a job about ten years ago that had the hours 8:30-5:30.

They “modernised” to 37.5 hours before I left so it’s sad to see that places are going the other way!

Wexone · 15/02/2023 16:47

Here in Ireland its a 39 hour week ( however civil service is 35 or 37.5 hours a week). All jobs ( factory admin) i have had are 8am to 4:30pm with a half hour unpaid lunch break. Currently i work a 40 hour week with a half hour lunch break and also flexi time. The extra hour a week is built up as holidays so we get 6 extra days a year on top of our standard holidays. If you work out 9 to 5 with a half hour unpaid lunch break, it equates to a 32 and a half hour week -Never heard of it

MuckyPlucky · 15/02/2023 16:47

I’ve worked across NHS clinical roles and 3rd sector orgs… it’s always been: 9-5 with a 30min unpaid lunch break.

Whosthebestbabainalltheworld · 15/02/2023 16:49

No office based jobs pay for lunch breaks, so the quotes hours always assume either 30 mins or 1hr unpaid in the middle.

I’ve worked for 30 years and am now in a senior finance role. My “lunch hour” is still unpaid. No such thing as a 1 hr lunch though, or 9-5.

Allblackeverythingalways · 15/02/2023 16:49

KimberleyClark · 15/02/2023 16:44

I've been there, I take my hour no matter what now.
It's not affected me negatively at work
I don't do overtime, I leave at 5, I don't do errands in my car. Others I work with choose to do those things, it doesn't benefit them in any way.

GoChasingWaterfalls · 15/02/2023 16:51

I'm 9-5 with half an hour for lunch. I'm part time but full time equivalent would be 37.5 hours with half an hour earlier finish on Friday.

I'd personally rather start at 8.30 and get an hour for lunch but I'm definitely a morning person.

Actually I've just realised that it's 37 hours with the earlier finish. I obviously don't work as a mathematician!

DottieUncBab · 15/02/2023 16:53

So I work 35 hours a week whatever hours I like normally 8-4 or 9-5.

I work in a well paid job and a profession.

My friend who works I hospitality has to work minimum 48 hours a week for a wage that’s about a third of mine.

Another friend works for a charity minimum 40 hours for about 18k!!

I think some jobs take the piss a bit with what full time hours apparently are.
Personally I think 35 hours should be considered full time by all companies.

Italiancitizenship · 15/02/2023 16:57

I work 8 to 5 with half an hour for lunch - it’s exhausting.

NewtyJESUS · 15/02/2023 16:59

I do 9-5:30 with an hours unpaid lunch, WFH 12/14 days.

Testina · 15/02/2023 17:00

I started office work early 90s and my experience all the way til today is that 9-5:30 is more common than 9-5:00.
So - 1 unpaid hour lunch, and 7.5 x 5 = 37.5 for full time.
Or 45 mins lunch and 38.75 hour week.
I remember “39 hours” as full time, too.

I think 9-5 wasn’t ever the main “office” time, but just is in people’s minds because of the phrase, “working a 9-5 job” (and Dolly, of course!)
And that’s only cos it’s more catchy than “a 9 to 5-thirty”.

CatJumperTwat · 15/02/2023 17:07

For those saying "oh it's the norm" it wasn't, even 5/6 years ago.

It's been the norm ever since I entered the job market over a decade over.

Indáirire · 15/02/2023 17:08

My basic hours are 35 a week but i generally do on average about 5 more a week of extra work.
