Am I too old to learn to a good standard now? I’m 43 this year. I’ve always wanted to play

Never too old!!!

Please, please have a go. Dedicate yourself and go for it!

Show on telly right now called The Piano- might help inspire:)

never too old OP! I would love to but sadly can’t afford it. If you can, go for it! You’ll never regret giving it a try.

I'd say it's now or never. I'm teaching myself keyboard at 54, and I keep forgetting and starting again. Based on myself, and female friends and family, I've noticed when hormonal changes kick in, its much more difficult to learn and to remember. Very frustrating!

IsItBedtimeYetNope · 15/02/2023 21:33

Do it OP! What have you got to lose? I just bought my first electric piano at 36. I had lessons as a young child but had to stop before I did any grades as we had no piano at home to practise on.

I'm teaching myself using the Me and My Piano books which start with teaching you how to keep time and then go from there.

Ive started this week too and I’m 63!

TigeToo · 15/02/2023 22:10

Can I ask those of you who are paying for lessons, how much should I expect to pay? I’m autistic and learn through doing and being shown so I’m not sure I could teach myself

My son is currently learning and we lay £30 per hour. I think 30 min lessons at £18.

bumb · 15/02/2023 22:16

Depending where you live...

South England it's generally anything between £36-50 per hour.

Check out Google for 'piano lessons near me' and send out some emails. Or word of mouth (better!).

VestaTilley · 15/02/2023 22:19

Go for it! I started learning a few months ago aged 36. Really enjoying it! It’s HARD and I’m only on nursery rhymes 😂 but it’s a great challenge. It takes time though, so be patient.

I had no musical background or ability to read music at all. Go for it.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/02/2023 22:24

Never too old to learn an instrument. My dad was late 50s when he started playing the guitar, in his early 60s he had his diploma and was teaching other to play classical guitar. (Admittedly he could already play a piano and read music).
Im older than you and have taken up the flute, - a long time piano play but lapsed for 40 years.
Go for it and most importantly enjoy the process.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 15/02/2023 22:51

Definitely not. I teach a variety of students from 5-80. I love the kids but the adults are great to teach as they really want to learn. Go for it! Happy for you PM me if you want more advice.

Oh do it! I started a year ago, adore

I used the app simply piano. It's a bit pricey, but I considered it the cost of three or four human lessons.

For me the major advantage is lack of embarrassment. If it takes me half an hour to get the first seven notes of twinkle twinkle little star, then so be it.

I'm not mortified that they think I'm an idiot, and I can relax and take as long as I need. If I need three days for the chord g then so be it.

Cheaper than a person.

It really holds your hand from baby steps.

I can practice any time. Usually I get in five minutes waiting for people to get in the car.

I practice with earphones plugged into the keyboard, so no one can hear the din.

@TigeToo You are never too old. If you want to try and self teach there are couple of adult beginner books.

Faber Adult piano adventures is good if you want to be able to play classics using both hands or Alfred's adult all in one course if you want to play more popular music using chords. Both books are on Amazon £15 ish pounds.

If you look on YouTube for the Let's play piano nethods channel, you can see what the pieces sound like and the guy who runs it has some fab tips.

You can start with a small cheap keyboard but you will need to move to either a piano or a full sized weighted digital keyboard to be able to play full scores. YouTube is great for keyboard reviews as you can see and hear them being played.
