Out of interest after looking at jobs online i thought id test my words per minute. went on a couple of different online counters and got between a measley 31-36 wpm the highest i got was 41 but that had a lower accuracy.

DD who is 12 asked what i was doing and she said theyd done that at school and she thought hers had been about 60 wpm.
I said are you sure and looked up the average which is 38-40 with proffesional typists averaging about 65-75

she wanted to do one and first one came out at 68 WPM with 99% accuracy! I cant believe ive never noticed how fast her fingers move shes a machine! AIBU to be shocked? is this just normal in teens -who never are away from a keyboard-

@Belsnickel to be fair, if you don't actually know to touchtype, 40 or so wpm sounds a very reasonable typing speed to have reached.

I learned typing on a microbee computer with the programmes files loaded from a set of audio cassettes (in the early 80s I think). Each level test had to be passed at I think 60 wpm with whatever % accuracy before you could progress. I'm of a generation where some can type and some can't, the younger you are the more likely you should have had an oppportunity to learn how.

I'd definitely recommend you look for some online touchtyping resources to try out if you would like to improve. Just practicing with whatever methodology you have developed for yourself probably won't get you much faster. Those of us who know touchtyping really don't look at the keyboard, for example.

In another 100 years our descendants will be born with much longer thumbs and forefingers, adapted for survival of the species. Also, much shorter weaker legs and great big cushiony bottoms.

DS is quite a slow writer so for his 9th bday I got him a laptop so by the time he's at secondary he'll be speed typing. 3 months later and he can type FAST!

I'm excited for him. He's good at something and it's given him a confidence boost.

I love it!

@2bazookas Way ahead of evolution on the bottom - weebles wobble, but they don’t fall over, according to ‘D’h.

I’m late twenties and was taught touch typing in school, it was a great skill to learn!

When my teens were younger (maybe 10-11 I can't remember), they would play typing games - you'd play against other people and the faster you type, the faster your car drove and you'd win the race/prizes etc. My teens and all their friends can type like ninjas. I think it's pretty normal.

I'm a lawyer and type all my own documents (gave up dictating ages ago). My average typing speed is 70 wpm with 97-98% accuracy. It's just something people do a lot nowadays in office jobs or as students. I can type fairly accurately without looking at the keyboard.
