In your opinion, what should we be most concerned about?

The war?
Inflation?
Global warming?
The NHS?
Womens rights?

What else?

There has been very little but big, somewhat terrifying, news stories over the past couple of years. Sometimes I find it overwhelming, it’s almost as if my brain can’t decide what to worry about first.

In your personal opinion, what current issues either globally or closer to home, warrant more intense and concentrated attention?

And I know it does little use to worry about things we have no control over, perhaps that was a bad choice of phrase. But I suppose I want to educate myself better on what’s going on around us and would massively appreciate some views and opinions on what you deem to be most pressing.

Thank you.

Global warming.

Iam4eels · 13/02/2023 19:41

Cost of living and associated issues.

CherLloydbyCherLloyd · 13/02/2023 19:41

Global warming is likely to result in way more deaths than the others, so that is where my concerns lie.

It really gives me the shivers actually. Totally mind boggling.

Well global warming because if we don’t fix that we’re all screwed. But ultimately all these things are connected, if the world is unstable (war), people feel insecure (the NHS), wealth is unevenly distributed (so inflation hits some people much harder), and society excludes large numbers of people from the table (feminism, racism) then there is no way climate change can be controlled because we are all running scared and / or trying to fix the chaos in front of us rather than work towards the long term health of the planet. Which is why it’s so hard.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 13/02/2023 19:46

The impacts of climate change will make the past few years look like dinner in the Ritz.

A very thought provoking post, thanks for taking the time to share. Seems so obvious when it’s written down like that. I’m a bit embarrassed to say global warming is the one I genuinely know least about. I need to be more concentrated in looking into it more x

@Luredbyapomegranate has summed it up.

A good starting point would be life on our planet by David Attenborough - or six degrees could change the world by national geographic. Those are good entry level, one hour long documentaries which shows causes and impacts of climate change. I use them with kids from about 15-18 and they are good springboards.

soboredtonight · 13/02/2023 19:48

I saw someone refer to cost of living issues as "cozzie livs" today. Confused it really ticked me

Irishbell · 13/02/2023 19:48

All state schools becoming part of Multi Academy Trusts. They are pyramid schemes where classroom teaching allergic leadership bodies cream off all the money, and the children (and teachers) are left with nothing. Biggest scam going.

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 13/02/2023 19:50

Only worry about what can control IMO. You can't control the war for example. Be informed of course but you can not inform that outcome. The nhs isn't looking good but everyone can make small steps to protect their health. I'm trying to think how I could go private if I had a major concern.

Areyouactuallyserious · 13/02/2023 19:50

The climate catastrophe. Aside from the excellent points raised above, it is going to have big impacts on key issues like food production, and mass migration that will further fuel instability, inflaming tensions and leading to things like war & economic inequality

5128gap · 13/02/2023 19:51

Selfishly, the NHS because its current state is impacting on several people I care for, who are variously - in great pain waiting a long time for surgery, facing more intrusive and less reliable procedures due to diagnostic delays and of an age where medical care is becoming more frequently required. A recent stint of visiting hospital terrified me and most people I know are now ignoring symptoms they should really see a GP for because they can't get past the appointment gatekeepers.
Women's rights are also very important to me, but at least this is an area where I feel I can channel my worries into action.

CherLloydbyCherLloyd · 13/02/2023 19:53

The thing is, many of these things impact predominantly people in one country, most of them impacting us. But climate change is way, way bigger. The impact on us in our lifetime is likely to be minimally disruptive, because we live in a moderate climate. But it’s causing desertification in the Sahara. It’s bleaching the reefs and they will take thousands of years to recover, if they ever do. It’s causing flooding and drought in Bangladesh/India. It’s killing many thousands upon thousands of people every year. And most of the people it impacts are unable to do anything about it, because they are poor, brown/black people, who don’t get the same attention as a little white girl clutching her teddy, or an OAP sitting alone in an NHS waiting room for 12 hours.

Now, obviously these things are all terrible, but climate change kills significantly more than any of those other things combined.

Fizzadora · 13/02/2023 19:54

Not to worry. Everything will be just hunky Dory when the Tories get voted out at the next election.

Another very interesting post. Although I’m giggling at your username, brilliant 😂

On a serious note I’m about to sit down to a climate documentary and try to educate myself a bit, it’s shocking how little I know. I’ve been focused on things far closer to home.

Andrew Tate's reach into the young males.
Honestly, it's terrifying.

5128gap · 13/02/2023 20:01

I think people are more likely to worry about the global or more distant concerns when they have fewer immediate concerns.
We've only so much capacity for worry if we're to remain functional, and if you can't have your operation or feed your family, you may not have the headspace to think too much about wars or the environment.

LuluBlakey1 · 13/02/2023 20:04

All of them are serious issues for different reasons but Global Warming at the top.

I said this at the start of the pandemic and I am still saying it- we are going to face significant social unrest and civil disturbances on our streets. We saw some at the weekend but they will really ramp up. The country feels like an explosion of all kinds of social pressures is boiling up. The weekend was about asylum seekers in Liverpool, the Drag Queen reading to children in a London library, the school in London where the black girl was attacked last week by an Irish traveller family. There will be more to come- religious tensions in the midlands, racial tensions- particularly but not only in London, strikes, tensions related to politics and the effects of government decisions, tensions related to energy companies, water companies. It's quite scary at the minute. Much of this is being shit-stirred by Far-right groups and extremist religious groups.

Pyewhacket · 13/02/2023 20:05

The UK's ability to influence climate change is ZERO !.

Scooopsahoy · 13/02/2023 20:06

Global warming undoubtedly as it encompasses so many concerns, and or exacerbates the effects of other problems.

Global warming will impact farming so will lead to increased food prices. It will cause massive migration away from large areas of the globe as they become unliveable and so will also have effects on the places these people migrate to. It will cause wars and conflict over increasingly scarce resources eg water. People will be forced to move to unsuitable/unsafe areas and so natural disasters will have higher death tolls….

Basically, it has to be our number one priority.

itsgettingweird · 13/02/2023 20:12

All of those.

And as one poster pointed out they aren't separate so it's not easy to prioritise.

Also academies and I've been saying that for a decade to deaf ears.

And after the last few days Aliens coming to add something else to the mix!!!!!!

But on a serious note it does feel like the worlds harmony has been on edge for about 5 years and is getting edgier.
