Son's phone has broken

DS has come home today and his phone is not working. I think it's just the screen that has broken (it's been cracked for a while).

It's his birthday next week.

Our options are

  • he uses his pocket money savings to get screen replaced
  • he uses his savings and birthday money to get new phone
  • I pay for it (I'm skint)
  • I upgrade my phone (which I can do on early upgrade) and give him mine.
  • upgrade mine, sell mine and buy him a cheaper one.

Obviously he wants an immediate solution as he can't use his phone at the moment.

It’ll really depend on what’s most affordable for your household, and also whether you despise him for existing like a lot of posters seem to think all parents of teenagers should.

My sons phone broke because he refused to put a case on it so I made him pay half of the cost to replace it (he gave me £40) that's all he had

he now has a case he won't be removing

Have a look at the Nokia website, there phones are (relatively) affordable outright, DDs has an amazing camera and she's had it two years and with several drops hasn't even gotten a scratch on it. Her sim is with ID mobile at £3.99 a month. The interface etc isn't quite as smooth as an iPhone but you get a lot for your money.

I'd allow him to have his bday money early and let him make the choice. It's a good way for him to learn how to make financial decisions.

I'd do as @mamnotmum and get him a new one for his birthday and then buy him a screen protector and a cheap case!
