To report someone for car insurance scam?

PicnicBunny · 13/02/2023 11:37

Someone I know let their son drive their car. He is 18, it was a powerful BMW. He did not have insurance. The other car he crashed into was pretty bad too, their car is a right off. Luckily no one got injured. The dad, the guy we know, has now said it was the daughter driving and managed to get insurance cover.

Did they learn their lesson? The boy apparently races a lot showing off and makes tik-tok videos and the family are very out there as ‘celebs’ in their mind. I am just mortified what a terrible father! But he is like that as is the mother and the rest of the family. And they do things like this and get away with it. I’ve heard of stories they scam people and owe people tons of money.

Am I being unreasonable to be angry? I don’t even think I’d report them tbh that feels out and out vile. And I wouldn’t be able to look them in the eye again. But I feel angry this time because for a while it was a crash and everyone was worried and so much drama. Someone could have died! And maybe another time that boy will end up killing someone. It’s so reckless.

So instead of sitting there stewing, do something about it and report.

rainbowtwist · 13/02/2023 11:39

Can you prove it?

HaggisBurger · 13/02/2023 11:40

Report it

LunaandJasper · 13/02/2023 11:45

If you did report it the insurance company wouldn’t just take your word for it you’d have to prove it. Not sure about the police but would imagine they’d want evidence too. How well do you know the dad? Maybe you could express your concerns with him. I can see why you’re annoyed.

ChateauMargaux · 13/02/2023 11:47

Report it - the driver of the other car must know it wasn't a woman driving..

Hoppinggreen · 13/02/2023 11:47

rainbowtwist · 13/02/2023 11:39

Can you prove it?

Exactly
I can see why you want to report this and you could try the non emergency Police number but they will want proof I imagine

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 13/02/2023 11:50

Report it but surely the other driver can confirm to the insurance company that the son was driving? They do ask who was driving.

BodenCardiganNot · 13/02/2023 11:52

How did the father get the insurance backdated?

BodenCardiganNot · 13/02/2023 11:53

And presumably the driver of the other car took details and reported it?

GoodChat · 13/02/2023 11:57

I would report him for driving with no insurance, absolutely.

LakeTiticaca · 13/02/2023 11:58

I would report anonymously to the police. These are the kind of drivers who cause carnage on the roads. Kill innocent people and sometimes even kill themselves

Then the family and friends are all over social media saying what heroes they were and blame others ( usually the police)

SiobhanSharpe · 13/02/2023 11:59

You're not unreasonable to be angry but I'm not sure there is anything you can actually do about it now, as PPs have said.
The man could deny he said (or did) this, but the insurance companies will be investigating anyway.
Unless they are not going through insurance and this person is paying the other driver's full costs. In which case i can see a tip-off to the police would be tempting...

BleepBipBoop · 13/02/2023 12:05

I get that these types of people can provoke an irrational kind of annoyance and it’s tempting to see them knocked off their high horse. Schadenfreude is real — just look how vicious people on here can be to anyone who
allegedly has a cushy lifestyle or sends their kids to private school.

But this story sounds like a whole lot of gossip to me, and frankly a bit far-fetched. Wouldn’t the other driver have seen who was driving? If the cars were that damaged they would hardly have all just driven away. Were there no police on the scene? Nobody had to produce ID?

I would take the high road if I were you and stay out of it. As tempting as it is to take these people down a peg you really have absolutely no idea what their lives are like. I know gossip and rumors are tempting but for your own dignity I would leave it.

DRS1970 · 13/02/2023 12:05

I would report my concerns to the police. Let them decide.

I was hoping to give them a tip-off but then, this is what I’d be worried about that it would become a full investigation. It’s a colleague and I can ignore them and just carry on but obviously annoyed as hell, it’s the bragging that gets me!

I know it was the boy because at the time he ran out when he got the call and told us the next day and for days that’s all he talked about. His idiot son racing again. He then told us a few days ago not to tell anyone and he’s going to try and see if his daughter will cover for the son. And she has insurance.

Proofwise, I’d need to find out the car reg and house address which then becomes very sly. I don’t feel comfortable doing that.

I don’t actually drive or have car insurance so I don’t get how this works tbh. He told everyone that people do this all the time.

Op you can report it anonymously here. They'll share the details with the insurer concerned.

PicnicBunny · 13/02/2023 12:23

Yes, the other person that was in the crash would be able to verify it was a guy and not a woman.

That’s probably not insurance policy to chase it up?

That’s how I feel. He himself didn’t crash. His son did. He’s probably just in a corner with teenagers and doing the best he can. (Though being a better human being might be a good idea!)

But none of my business, right?

I feel like if I leave it, at some point something will teach them to become better people.

Now that is tempting… but okay. Deep breath need to think about it because it really turns peoples lives upside down doesn’t it

OP posts:
GoodChat · 13/02/2023 12:34

It'll affect them more when he's dead or kills someone.

maximist · 13/02/2023 12:37

100% report it using the link a PP gave. The son could kill someone next time! And why should the daughter have that in her record? I'd get onto Crimestoppers too, that's also anonymous. I'm sure that giving false info in those circumstances is a crime.

QuietlyConfident · 13/02/2023 12:37

You don't have to prove an anonymous tip-off, the police/insurers can investigate or not if they think it's worthwhile. I've got to say I'd be inclined to snitch out of righteous feminist rage if nothing else: it's a microcosm of a lot of things wrong with the way we raise boys and girls.
