DS vomiting when chickenpox

MozFan · 12/02/2023 21:26

DS is 4 and started with spots yesterday. He was really unwell and clingy yesterday and off his food.
This morning he seemed more alert and happy, although more and more spots were/are popping up all over him.
He ate quite a bit today, including a reasonable evening meal.
Before bed he said he felt sick, but nothing happened.
Then when he’d been asleep for only an hour we heard crying, went upstairs and he’d been sick all over his bed.

His spots are all starting to come out now and are itchy. Is this unusual? I’ve never heard of an upset stomach or vomiting associated with chickenpox before?

The chicken pox can also be inside the body. I'm not surprised he's feeling crappy. Poor thing

Chocolatefrenzy · 12/02/2023 21:28

Yep, my son was violently sick several times when he had chicken pox 15 years ago when he was 1. It is a miserable time for them hope he feels better soon op

MissHoollie · 12/02/2023 21:29

He may have a vomiting virus in addition to chickenpox

DonutsAreNotLunch · 12/02/2023 21:29

If he has a temperature that could make him vomit!

LibrariansGiveUsPower · 12/02/2023 21:31

Call 111 - NHS lists vomiting as sign of rare potential complications. Any neck stiffness or dislike of bright lights call 999

rarely known a child with chicken pox not vomit, but call NHS if it is listed as a red flag

MozFan · 12/02/2023 21:37

He’s only been sick once and nothing since that so far, if he’s sick again I will call 111.

It also says on Google:
Chickenpox may also cause headache, tiredness, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, runny nose, or cough. The rash of chickenpox usually starts on the stomach or back and can spread anywhere on the skin.

So it’s very confusing, I will trust NHS over a Google search of course.

He’s fast asleep now, no more vomiting at the moment, so I’m hoping it was a one off.

Some kids are much more prone to be sick than others. DD1 is barely ever sick; DD2 often throws up at the onset of a mild cold - she must have a more sensitive system. I’m pretty sure being sick was one of her chickenpox symptoms too. Hope your DS is better soon.

My 6 year old dd had it last year, started off being sick so I thought it was a sickness bug but shortly after the spots made their grand entrance, I agree with pp, I think a temperature can make them sick. If I remember correctly you can't give them ibuprofen. For the itching the only thing that provided rapid relief was that mousse, poxitin (not sure of the spelling).

Beginningless · 12/02/2023 22:16

My younger one had violent diarrhoea at the onset, just before we realised the spots were there. Poor thing, hope he’s ok.

Irishmumof02 · 12/02/2023 22:20

My two had them last year two weeks apart ds first and it didn’t faze him at all but them my dd was so sick with it she’s threw up loads I ended up ringing emergency doctors and was told give her lucozade sport to keep her hydrated and antihistamines and paracetamol if needed. I found avenno oat bath soak worked so well to take some of the itch away.

MozFan · 13/02/2023 12:27

No more sickness today as yet, but sitting on the sofa feeling tired and out of sorts. No temperature. Just itchy and uncomfortable. And not himself. He’s usually chatty and very active, so it’s horrible to see.

Dc1 had several days of sickness in the early days of chickenpox and a very high temperature too. He did have a strong bout of it and covered in spots everywhere. Wiped him out for nearly 2 weeks, he was 3. Siblings weren’t as ill.

IamMaz · 13/02/2023 13:16

Our son had chickenpox one Christmas when he was about 3 or 4. He had no symptoms and felt fine. During the day, he got upset about something and started crying. My DH took him upstairs and then called me up. Our son had been violently sick and was vomiting blood! It was horrendous but all over very quickly and then he was right as rain.

We phoned he surgery to check whether it was the chickenpox that could have caused this and we were told it was and that they can get spots inside their throat that can burst and result in the bleeding.

onionringcheeseypuff · 13/02/2023 13:22

When my son has a fever he vomits and when he had chickenpox he had a bad fever for two days and vomited, I didn't realise it was unusual

MozFan · 13/02/2023 16:34

I’ve given him loratadine for kids which is all we had in (a non drowsy antihistamine) as he’s so itchy and irritated. But it’s not really doing anything ☹️ He’s still really itchy and stratching himself lots.

Would piriton work better?

loratadine is a version of clarityn.

Try the poxityn (not sure of spelling but it's close) mousse, honestly it saved us with both our girls, when they started itching they literally begged for their mousse again and the relief was immediate- good luck hang in there
