..to keep my 10yr old at home today after she puked in the night?

Only she is bugging me now to take her to school, but I tend to err on the side of caution with vomiting.

She was babysat last night by her fond grandmama, under whose tutelage she ate only Brussels sprouts and two hot cross buns (main dish of the day was roast lamb, and she is a lamb refusnik) all of which reappeared at 3:30 am.

She has pressure spots under her eyes from vomiting, and other sundry spots on her cheeks and forehead. She seems moderately well, but what if it is a bug? My inclination is to keep her at home, but she claims she is well enough and is demanding to go to school.

Need some ammo here...

Might be that winter vomiting bug in which case if it was our school they would want her kept at home for 2 days...

pagwatch · 08/02/2008 10:32

I have three kids at three different schools and ALL ofthem ask that a child who has vomitted is kept at home for at keast 24 hours.
And you don't need ammo do you? She is your daughter. You are in charge not her. You don't have to explain or justify yourself do you?

TotalChaos · 08/02/2008 10:33

YABU - it's good hygiene practice to keep kids away from loads of other kids for at least 24 hours since the last emission.

TotalChaos · 08/02/2008 10:33

oops of course meant YANBU

Just tell her she's not allowed to go to school because she was sick - end of discussion. Then take her mind off it with her favourite jigsaw/book/DVD.

WigWamBam · 08/02/2008 10:34

Our school insists they stay at home for 48 hours after vomiting too ... which is why dd is sitting on the sofa watching the television right now, and being as chirpy and sparky as she ever is

You're the boss though; if you say she stays at home, that's the deal.

moljam · 08/02/2008 10:35

agree with LilRedWG just tell her shes not allowed.

poptot · 08/02/2008 10:45

Keep her at home , this is how noro virus is spread, she needs 48hrs clear. Hope she feels better soon.

MikeStand · 08/02/2008 10:54

I also have a puking 10 year old at home at the moment. He was off for 2 days. Then went to school yesterday after seeming perky and then threw up last night, so it might not be the end of it. Hope your DD is better soon but she has to stay off school really. We have to be vomit free for 48 hours as well.

duchesse · 08/02/2008 10:55

In fairness it is relatively unlikely to be that winter vomiting bug as there are only 36 children in her school (ie limited contact with ye outside world...) and no-one else at school has it. It is far more likely be due to a surfeit of Granny's (Sainsbury's) Hot Cross Buns, but I'm keeping her at home to be on the safe side. The ammo was to prove to her that there are many other mean mummies out there in the world. Thanks, ladies.

(btw, she's upstairs crying now...)

Our school advises to stay at home for 48 hours after vomiting. I'd insist she stays at home.

moljam · 08/02/2008 11:16

our schools are 48 hours too.when i worked in local preschool i got puked on by 3 year old sent in after being sick in night-mum thought he be ok-it was looooverly!

LostPuppy · 08/02/2008 12:33

YANBU.

If you sent your child to my kids school the day after it had chundered and other kids got sick, all the parents would blame you.

It could have just been some dodgy food, but the other parents would hate you if your kid gave theirs an illness and they then went home and chundered all over their new sofa/carpet/amanda wakely

Squirdle · 08/02/2008 12:43

Ah bless her, she must have a lovely school to be so upset about not going.

But as others have said, I would keep her at home. Our school has a 48 hours policy too. DS2 was sick a bit at school at home time on Monday but wasn't again. He just developed a temperature and cold on Tuesday and was fine on Wednesday, but I didn't send him back until yesterday as he had been sick at school (as had my neighbours son in the same class on the same day)

I really enjoyed our morning together as DS3 was at nursery, so DS2 got much needed one to one time with me.
