Scams on Facebook?

Aibu to wonder why people keep falling for them? You know the type, single mum usually multiple kids including a new baby, hasn’t got any money it’s always the same story, yet people still keep falling for these scams and sending money to strangers online. If you warn people to be careful you get people saying “well they haven’t asked for money so it’s not a scam” but they are not stupid they know they don’t have to ask all it takes is a sob story and people will offer money. I can’t believe people still fall for it, it should be advice only.

For the same reason people fall for them on here.

Lots of people aren't that bright and the opportunity to make themselves feel good outweighs healthy scepticism, logic, and common sense.

Some people prefer to risk being scammed to risking leaving someone in a bad situation

But they can offer advice without sending money, if someone was genuine they would be happy with being pointed in the direction of a food bank, she’s been scamming all over fb yet still they fall for it, just think if people stopped offering money these people would stop. Even if people feel that way they could offer to buy essentials and it will soon become clear they only want cash!

What? Never seen this. A woman random woman posts she is hard done to and people send money? How do you see their status if you don't know them? Is it an advert type thing?

SpinningFloppa · 12/02/2023 20:49

It’s on Facebook groups for the local area they basically post it over loads of groups the same thing copied and pasted

There was a woman kept posting that her baby was due and she had "nothing" then a big list of everything she wanted, she received bottles then kept asking for more, someone said I gave you bottles! Then she replied yeah but I'm looking for a different kind, so why take them then? She posted her long list several times and it was removed by the group organiser in the end who said you must have everything you need by now. I can't stand it on Facebook or tiktok. They're never likable people always come across as entitled and have an attitude problem

Yes I see this all the time on our local fb giving page. My favourites are:

"Really need a dining room table as just moved in and have no furniture. Kids are eating on the floor."
"Here's a decent one in perfect condition you are welcome to!"
"No thanks hun x x"

Or

"My teens phone has broken and I don't have the money for a replacement. They need it so its safe for them to get home! Anyone got a spare iPhone x lying around? X"

And then there’s the really laughable ones and they’re always from foreign names in our area. They’ll say ‘immediate packing job $100 an hour. Needed 8am-8pm. PM for more details’.

Honestly, if I could get $1200 for packing for 12 hours then I’d be down there like a shot. Sadly, it’s clearly a scam 😢
