Never ending period!

I’m now on day 9 now of really heavy bleeding, have just changed my pad for the third time during the night. Starting to get worried now that something could be really wrong. This is the first time I’ve had a period like this, they’ve always been very light, I think probably because I’ve been on Dianette on/off for a number of years for my skin. I’m on it now so no idea why all of a sudden I’m having a period like this. I’m having really big clots I can feel come out especially when I stand after lying in bed. I’m 41 so wonder if it’s to do with early menopause. I’ve never given birth.
Has anyone else experienced something like this out of the blue? I’m going to try and speak to my doctor on Monday if there’s no change - at the moment it seems to be getting heavier rather than slowing down. How much longer can it go on for! Plus it’s costing a fortune in pads!

Sorry to hear this. Has anything changed eg have you recently received a COVID vaccine (known to mess with our cycles) or other vaccine, or is there any possibility that you could have got pregnant and this is actually a miscarriage? In the meantime I'd up my iron intake with supplements or red meat.

Please see the Dr. But it does sound similar to the horror show of the perimenopause. My GP prescribed transexamic acid to slow the bleeding. When I haven't had that available, ibuprofen also lessens the bleeding. It's all very grim and you have my sympathies. As you say, your first call is to a medical professional and don't let them diminish you or your symptoms.

Is there a possibility that this could be a miscarriage? I bled heavily for 6 weeks when I had one (I know now from the GP that I actually need treatment).

You need to contact your GP; in the meantime Ibuprofen taken regularly is supposed to help slow the flow down.

I now take Transexamic Acid on prescription for heavy periods due to perimenopause.

If you’re passing clots bigger than a 50p piece I’d ask for advice from 111.

RedDoughnut · 12/02/2023 08:06

Could be a fibroid?

dottiedodah · 12/02/2023 08:10

I would call 111 right now .it needs to be looked at ASAP by a medical professional. Could be a number of things but needs checking out .hope you soon feel better

ConfusedGin · 12/02/2023 08:32

Echoing all of the above. Fibroids are more common in women who have never given birth.

Tranexamic acid can really help but for this I'd be asking for norethistorone to stop the bleed and tests - likely hormones to check peri, scan for fibroids and making sure your smear is up to date

Floating101 · 12/02/2023 09:08

Thankyou for the replies. Definitely no chance it is a miscarriage and no recent covid jabs or anything. I’m going to call 111 shortly I think as still no sign of slowing.

Hiya,

I was put on a course of Tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding, about 10 days worth of tablets. Dr arranged a scan at the hospital once bleeding had stopped. All was ok, they decided it was likely due to me being on Dianette for such a long time. I'm not on it any longer.

Hope you are ok, it's horrible isn't it. I'd make an appt to see your Dr x
