Taking wings off dead fly = psychopath?

gezelligheid · 11/02/2023 20:05

I sprayed a housefly with spray and left it to die. Later I've come back and it has no wings. Although he denies it, I know DS11 removed the wings. When I asked about it he got nervous and started laughing and denied it.

Should I be worried that he is pulling the wings off a dead fly? Is it psychopath behaviour?

YABU - not psychopath behaviour
YANBU - psychopath behaviour

I'm rather ashamed to admit that I used to catch bumble bees in an old sieve and drown them because my mums allergic to wasps and I thought I was saving her!! 8 year old child logic I guess. I've grown into a (fairly) normal adult who is law abiding and has 4 children.

birdglasspen · 11/02/2023 21:00

I did it as a kid. I promise I have never hurt anyone or thing since. Well I do kill flies but I no longer remove their legs…anyway fly was already dead?! I did it when they were alive then killed them!

ArcticSkewer · 11/02/2023 21:00

Killing defenceless animals unnecessarily and with cruelty/inflicting pain could be a sign of psychopathy. So I guess that's on you.

I'd say your son sounds more like a future scientist - phew - can't have too many psychopaths in one family!

MissMaple82 · 11/02/2023 21:05

I think you're both psychopaths

Do you ever wish you could unread a thread? 🥺

Yeah 😩

Marylou62 · 11/02/2023 21:20

When my brother and I were younger we used to have fly hospitals..
We used our Dad's old matchboxes with loo rolls sheets and pillows.. we'd fly spray them and then put them to bed...
Neither of us grew up cruel.. I'm was a nurse and he has about 20 rescue cat's in the UAE...
I wouldn't worry...

Witchcraftandhokum · 11/02/2023 21:23

The Macdonald Triad. (Hurting animals + bed wetting + arson = serial killer) has long since been disproved.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 11/02/2023 23:02

We used to chop worms in half but I definitely did not turn into a psycho

LimeTwists · 11/02/2023 23:07

I deliberately squashed live slugs as a child (which is much worse) and now am a vegan and wouldn’t hurt anyone. So I really wouldn’t worry about him poking a dead fly and taking the wings off. As long as he isn’t enjoying pain or suffering in living creatures or enjoying dead animal gore rather too enthusiastically.

Upsidedownagain · 11/02/2023 23:09

My dd, aged 4 or 5, stamped on a snail. Her teacher was horrified. She's 22 now and, while she has her faults as we all do, is definitely not a psychopath!

We used to cut worms in half as someone else mentioned. We understood it made two worms (though I don't know if that is actually true?).

I've also killed quite a few wasps in my time.....

PS I don't think flies actually have feelings.....

This is so funny. All I can think is yuck how gross to play with flies.

BatshitBanshee · 11/02/2023 23:24

Your son wouldn't hurt a fly. You on the other hand...

Unless there's a massive dripfeed about your neighbourhood cats going missing and your DS's pet hamster having strange amputations, I think he's fine.

You on the other hand need to get a handle on yourself; when you hear hooves, think horses..not zebras. You'll give the kid a complex if he can't do normal curiosity things without you diagnosing psychopathy.

BrutusMcDogface · 11/02/2023 23:26

I didn't know fly spray was bad so I have learnt something today too!
How about Maggots? I got them in my bin last year when it was really hot (it was horrible they made me feel sick) and now I'm wondering how I should have got rid of them. Google searching told me to use bleach and boiling water.

If you’ve got any neighbours or friends with chickens, chickens love maggots! Bleach and boiling water would certainly be effective pretty quickly. Squishing them would props my be quickest but a lot of people are squeamish about maggots.

DonutsAreNotLunch · 11/02/2023 23:38

My daughter regular dissects dead insects so she can look at bits undder her microscope. On one occasion she used her pocket money to buy a whole fish from the fishmonger and dissected it at home. I
really hope her interest is purely scientific and she is not future psychopath.

On the other hand she would NEVER kill or harm an insect. She rescues every single spider, fly or bug she finds in the house, she started a campaign in school to get the teachers to stop killing spiders because if upset her so much when a teacher stamped on one that appeared in the classroom.

user40643 either you are trolling or don't understand the concept of freezers.

Zwellers · 11/02/2023 23:56

MissMaple82 because of course you have never killed a fly/mosquito/spider in yor life.

Don't troll hunt me. Freezers don't remove bacteria.

Carlycat · 12/02/2023 01:18

You sprayed it and left it to die. You're the psychopath

NotTerfNorCis · 12/02/2023 01:21

If it's already dead, not a problem.

Carlycat · 12/02/2023 01:21

No need to kill it weirdo. Just open a fucking window 🙄

Moobae · 12/02/2023 03:01

Can't we teach children not to hurt living things? I don't understand lots of behaviour described on this thread or people seemingly feeling it's normal to hurt another creature.

I agree!

I agree. The thread is very ‘off’. I didn’t hurt any creatures as a child or adult. My kids were taught to respect all creatures, but being nice to all creatures seemed to come natural to them anyway thankfully. What a horrible thread.

HitTheBars · 12/02/2023 04:23

Also, none of us pull off parts of dead creatures or cut open our dead pets. Some very fucked up posters.
