To move a half hour+ drive away from where I work/ childminder

I currently work in the Bromley area, and my daughters childminder is in Bromley. However I can't afford to live here, would it be unfeasible to move to Sevenoaks (11 miles away) and travel?

Have you attempted the journey in the height of rush hour?

I live 7 miles away from my workplace. The journey should take 20 minutes but on a bad day it can be well over an hour.

I live 26 miles away from work. It should take 47 mins according to maps. But it never takes me under an hour. And it gets me down.

Bromley to Sevenoaks would be a nightmare journey at the best of times.

Sevenoaks isn’t at all cheap! Unless you’re living with family or something there?

cantaffordtolivehere · 11/02/2023 17:03

I'd be travelling at 7am and it says it would take half hour door to door (the flat I'm looking at to the childminders) which I guess isn't tooo bad

But Yh it is a fucking nightmare journey usually

It seems to be much cheaper to rent, although maybe it's just certain areas of Sevenoaks I'm not sure

I can't see a problem. My dc went to the closest childminder, but that was 8 miles away (rural area), so you aren't talking much further than that. I commute much further that half an hour for work.

One downside to be aware of is the dc sleeping on the way home from the childminder and it effecting bedtime, though.

DDivaStar · 11/02/2023 17:53

Well assuming your timing are right 1/2hr shouldn't be so problem. The only issues is if you needed to use the childminder when you're not working that wouldn't be very convenient.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/02/2023 17:58

Used to take me longer than that to walk home from my childminder's house.

It sounds fine - at worst, you just leave at 6.45am instead. They'll be warm and dry in the car if you're there a little bit early.

I did a long tedious car commute every day for 17 years and it added 3 hours to my already long and demanding day. 15 hours a week, the equivalent of 2 working days every week. My colleague lived 100 metres from work and her quality of life was so much better than mine.
