To ask if you know what gutties are?

In mid Scotland, they're the local word for plimsoles or basic trainers. Everyone at school had gutties for PE.

What are your strange local words others haven't heard of or need explaining?

Sneakers aka runners.

Scottish here

The word "backie"

Meaning to give someone a lift/ride on the back of your bike

It's a backer in Dublin!

I also know what gutties are.

I knew what they were, but round here they were 'pumps'

Pillion is a local word I think- when you give someone a ride on the back of your pushbike.

Pillion is the name for the back seat/person on any bike or scooter. Nor regional as far as I know.

Bernadinetta · 11/02/2023 17:43

Sand shoes here in North Tyneside. All the kids at the school I teach at have to have indoor plimsolls and change into them from their outdoor shoes. They all call them sand shoes.
As in… “Miss Bernadinetta, I can’t find my sand shoes!!” x 50 per day 😅

GotABeatForYouMama · 11/02/2023 17:45

The older people in the village where I live (in Somerset), often call others "butt", as in " 'ere Ted pass us thit* spanner....cheers butt".

*Not a typo.

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/02/2023 17:46

Daps (they were originally called Dunlop Athletic Plimsolls) where I'm from . Bristol area. We have the t shirt in local dialect too.

A relative of mine calls them tea cakes.. to me a tea cake is a roll with fruit in it?!

Ooh I love all the regional offerings for an alleyway. Ours is ‘ginnel’

MrsHughesPinny · 11/02/2023 17:49

Plimsolls are daps here.

Dalekjastninerels · 11/02/2023 17:50

I say bread roll; grew up in Ireland and moved to Australia as a teenager.

Gingerkittykat · 11/02/2023 17:53

Guttie = gymshoe or trainer.
Baffies = slippers.
Goonie = dressing gown.
Neeburs = friends.
Dumps = birthday bum kicks.
Ootsider = the end piece of a loaf of bread.

Who can guess what part of Scotland I am from?

midgemadgemodge · 11/02/2023 17:55

Who runs messages when getting a bun?

emmathedilemma · 11/02/2023 17:56

The north east? Aberdeenshire maybe?

reluctantlogin · 11/02/2023 17:57

I grew up in Northern Ireland in the 1950s where plimsolls were called gutties. We were told it’s because they were made originally from gutta percha a form of latex or rubber.

My mum used to say up to oxters - always assumed it was armpits?

DelphiniumBlue · 11/02/2023 18:00

In London, it's plimsols, but Scouser DH says pumps. I think pumps are something completely different, more like court shoes. And plimsols are not basic trainers, they are always canvas; the white, lace-up version are aka tennis shoes. Trainers have a different sort of sole.

Mumof2amazingasdkiddos · 11/02/2023 18:00

I didn't know the word until I moved to Belfast, I grew up in England and always called them pumps

User45378754 · 11/02/2023 18:00

Heal of bread = end of the loaf

pleat · 11/02/2023 18:01

Thatboymum · 11/02/2023 16:40

Gutties aren't trainers though?

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 11/02/2023 18:04

Is glaikit used outside Scotland? That's my favourite insult. Means daft.

Solonge · 11/02/2023 18:04

Boak....to puke
