Argument over sea air and wind

Dd, 4, has had a really bad cough for so long now, we’ve been to the drs and prescribed some medicine, but nothing else, lots of kids the same.
Dh believes we should take her to the beach, very windy and quite cold where we are now, big waves etc. He thinks the sea air and wind would be good for clearing things out. Whilst I would normally agree that outdoors and the sea is good for you, the way she is and how bad her cough is, I think she should do the opposite at the moment-wrap up warm and stay in.
Who is right?

I would base that on how she is in herself.
Tired, cuddly, sad - blankets and movies!
Climbing the walls, driving you mad - beach!
I wouldn't drag a sick kid out that wasn't up for it though

Any respiratory issues, I find that very cold air makes me worse... shallower breathing etc.

www.asthma.org.uk/advice/triggers/winter-asthma-triggers/

"You might notice that your asthma symptoms get worse when it’s cold. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Cold air is dry, which irritates your airways. It can also make you produce more mucus, which can make your asthma feel worse.

If cold air affects your asthma, there are plenty of ways you can protect your airways from the cold, including wrapping a lightweight scarf loosely around your nose and mouth when outside. This warms the air you breathe in, so it’s less likely to irritate your airways."

"Standing in a sea breeze" doesn't feel like a text book medical cure for a cough but wrapping up warm for a bracing walk on the beach is always a great activity to lift the spirits.

A lingering cough in my experience is not the same as being actively unwell, and I agree fresh air can really help. It’s not that cold this weekend, so I’d wrap up and get out in it.

Isbemorelikemeandbelesslikeyou · 11/02/2023 11:07

@Hollyhead It’s an aggressive cough that keeps her awake at night

@StonwEd Teary, quite clingy and moody

Cuddles & duvet.
I'm a big fan of exercise when I have a mild cold because I'm an adult who can choose it's what I feel like doing. Teary & weak I'd be under the duvet, too.

No way!

I live by the sea and when it is windy and cold I cannot breathe at the best of times. Although today would be fine as it is not windy and quite warm.

With the dryish cough that is going around at the moment, I'd recommend popping her in a bath or shower - some form of warmth and steam. That has worked wonders for my recent cough.

This can really help before bed too, especially if done in a lying position as it posturally drains the bits that will irritate when she lies down. My sister used to get up and do this for her kids when they had croup during the night too - not put them in the shower, just run it for the steam.

He could take her, and then you can have a cuddly afternoon? I wouldn’t go too if you think it’s a bad idea - let him go and try to make it fun. It may work wonders, and if it doesn’t then at least he will know it’s not because of you wrecking it!

Sounds like an old wives tale he's leaned from his mum or dad.

Nimbostratus100 · 11/02/2023 11:32

thats a crazy question, how could we possibly judge!

Isbemorelikemeandbelesslikeyou · 11/02/2023 11:35

@Nimbostratus100 It’s not really a crazy question 🤷🏻‍♀️

it is, we have no idea about your daughters health or what is going to be of benefit to her, how could we?

Sounds like an old wives tale he's leaned from his mum or dad.

A lot of these 'old wives tales' have definite basis in factual truth. They're old tales and remedies for a reason, because they often work. There is a lot of research about the chemicals in sea air and sea water being good for respiratory illnesses, and for improved wellbeing generally. I'm not saying it would work for op's child, who knows, but it isn't complete nonsense.

Psychonabike · 11/02/2023 12:04

It's not about the cold, it's about the salt in the sea air. And there is some evidence that it helps:

It may just take her mind off being poorly for a little while and wear her out enough for a good sleep later but only you and your dh know how poorly she is right now so it’s hard for us to judge.
