YABU

A lot of the posts in AIBU are drivel now. Bring back the good old days when people were more honest in their replies instead of following the crowd like sheep. As for the posts with photographs of skin complaints (!) - what the actual fuck is unreasonable about something that grows on you? Jog on to a pharmacy and stop wasting my scrolling time!

Or @80sMum a model thought is people could just not click on titles of threads they don’t want to read…. Or is that too sensible?

StarsSand · 11/02/2023 11:47

@WashAsDelicates

YABU if this is the first issue you've ever championed in relation to prisoner rights.

I've worked on and off with people in prison for 15 years. They have always had significant and multiple human rights and welfare issues. On the whole- no one has ever given a fuck.

Suddenly, all these middle class women are taking to their keyboards about the rights of women in prison. About this one issue. Which just happens to relate to transgender people.

Excuse me for being slightly cynical about what motivating factors are at play.

As someone who has been in the trenches it annoys me. I don't come to AIBU to have someone force their uninformed politics down my throat trying to educate me. These posters are never actually asking if they are unreasonable- they are damn sure they are right.

So they should stay in their allocated thread and scream agreement at each other and leave the rest of us to enjoy the site.

Happylittlechicken · 11/02/2023 11:50

@StarsSand so as you’ve worked with vulnerable women in prisons for all those years world you say locking violent male rapists in with them is beneficial for those women or harmful? Would you rather women ignored those women and let them suffer or would you rather women protested against it?

I know there are far more pressing issues that cause a lot more harm and suffering than this one.

Yet people zero in on this one issue. 🤔 I wonder why.

WashAsDelicates · 11/02/2023 11:57

You make a lot of unfounded assumptions. I gave that question as an example of reasonable use of AIBU, not as a political statement. You have no knowledge about me, my background, my politics or my activism.

And so what if middle class women suddenly become aware of an issue and take to their keyboards? Are they not allowed to have opinions or ask questions? Does having a privilege background mean you should not engage with issues important to those less privileged than you?

As ever, if you do not like a thread, ignore it. If you feel it inappropriate, report it. If you think they are wrong (or ABU), correct them. If you think they are uninformed, educate them or point them in the right direction. All these only if you want to engage, of course.

But who are you to dictate that a person may or may not post in AIBU? YABVU.

Happylittlechicken · 11/02/2023 11:58

True. But if women’s lives are awful in prison, why would you want to give them extra trauma by locking violent males up with them? Surely you should be happy people are now talking about this. Who knows, it might give people the incentive to look further into other issues affecting incarcerated women and work to eradicate those problems also?

Agreed. I wonder when the first attempt at a "trans panic" defence will be trotted out in court.

YABU in general, AIBU is kind of a catch all now, none of the other boards have much traffic. TTC and pregnancy boards work well but otherwise if you want advice then you go to AIBU. I really dont mind. I like the variety without having to trawl through all the boards and with it being active the old threads move down the list quickly. It'd be boring if it was just YABU, YABU, YANBU, YABU, YANBU, YANBU.

Although, I got very sick of all the royal family stuff constantly and I'm sick of the same gender argument constantly there is an actual problem that has just been muddied and made a joke by people complaining about random senseless shit. When there's something going off ,like covid, in the world then it needs to be on its own board as its pretty active then. But otherwise I like everything being in AIBU.

That's true. But subject titles don't always accurately represent what's in the actual post.

Users can filter the talk topics they see, to exclude any that don't interest them. AIBU is a popular topic and that popularity tempts many to start threads that are completely unrelated to the topic in order to get lots of people to see it. In any other topic, the chances are that the post would be relocated, but that doesn't seem to happen with AIBU.

Hydie · 11/02/2023 13:10

When I come on MN I only come to the AIBU section, so I'd have no clue what's going on in the other sections. Seems like that's a general things as I often see people saying they posted elsewhere and got nothing. So I can understand people posting here if they are looking for opinions, whether it's an AIBU or not.

BertieBotts · 11/02/2023 14:45

I think only coming to AIBU is a thing now that the site is bigger and faster moving. There is also less of a parent focus on AIBU - it used to be wherever you posted on the site you would expect responses from mostly other parents, except perhaps in specific non-parenting sections (like Dogs) but when I posted a jokey thread on AIBU a couple of months ago with the expectation that it would hit an audience of mostly parents/mums, I got massively flamed because "not only parents come here!" Confused I mean, right, I don't think that only parents are ALLOWED to post, there have always been members without children, but it does still say at the top "Mumsnet" and "By parents for parents". I don't think it's that weird to assume that a parenting site will be frequented by mostly parents.

girlfriend44 · 11/02/2023 15:14

On the other parenting board topics got moved.

Maybe the people wanting to police the site haven't yet realised they don't have to open and read every thread, bless their wee Sisyphean hearts.
