Applied for DD’s passport renewal on 24th Jan. Got a text on Thursday to say it was approved and was being printed.

And that includes my 5 day delay in sending off her old one (long story).

Very different story from early last summer when I was doing DS’s. Go do it now if you need one!

Thank you, so I send 18yo ds as a renewal with an adult renewal fee?

If he still has time on his child passport, he can use it until expired. It just means he'll get an adult one next time he renews.

MaryShelley1818 · 11/02/2023 09:00

Applied for DS renewal on 31st January before the price hike. Verification done, Photo uploaded and last update was yesterday to say they'd received his old passport.

ShesThunderstorms · 11/02/2023 09:04

We got two first kids ones back in 6 days and my renewal in a week all last month. I was very impressed!

TheClitterati · 11/02/2023 09:09

I sent dds renewal off on 1st Feb. Nothing back yet.

We used the Post Office service. It really is excellent value. £16 and that includes photo, postage & filling everything out. It's all approved beforehand.

glad Someone mentioned the child to adult thing- ds has turned 18 so does he need a new adult one or is there some sort of renewal as his is still in date?
also how easy is it to take your own photo or is it not worth it?

You just renew it when the date comes up. You don't need to renew it early just because they turn 16 or 18. The child one only lasts for 5 years so just keep an eye on the renewal date and change it then.

Karwomannghia · 11/02/2023 09:33

I’m not renewing it early, they run out in April?

SoupDragon · 11/02/2023 09:50

Karwomannghia · 11/02/2023 08:51

Thanks @dew141 dd is 16 so that’s both changing then!

You only need to renew them if they have expired. My DC all used child passports until they were 20!

Houseplantmad · 11/02/2023 09:53

DDs first adult passport has taken five weeks, which I was quite surprised with. Get them sorted now as it’s only going to get worse.

maximist · 11/02/2023 09:54

I applied online on 30 Jan (took my own photo on my phone), sent my old one off next day and had an email yesterday to say that my new one is printing. All very efficient and straightforward.

Karwomannghia · 11/02/2023 10:01

I don’t know why people think I’m renewing my kids’ passports early, I’m not, they’re about to expire but they happen to now be over 16.

Whammyyammy · 11/02/2023 10:03

Renewed mine in January, took 9 days, we applied for my baby grandsons last week, been updated it's being processed.

BertieBotts · 11/02/2023 11:44

I was just clarifying, because this made me wonder if you thought that because he was 18 he couldn't still use his child's one:

ds has turned 18 so does he need a new adult one or is there some sort of renewal as his is still in date

KickboxingWanker · 11/02/2023 12:08

He can still use the child’s one if it’s in date - when it’s due for renewal his next one will be an adults ppt.

just make sure you have required length on it for wherever he’s travelling to.

No they have an expiry date on which is coming up but when I went onto the website the options were renew a child’s passport/ renew adult/ or get a new adult one/ child one. No clear option for which one to go for if they’d turned into an adult which was why I asked pp who mentioned the same scenario and they answered.

We applied for my sons just after covid (June 2021) and it took just over a week. I am surprised it takes longer now.

Meganshappyhour · 11/02/2023 13:12

Just under 10 working days for a renewal for DS (child to adult passport).

All done online , no need for countersignng etc.

maximist · 14/02/2023 13:11

Update - the passport renewal I applied for on 30 Jan arrived today. I'm very impressed with the service.

Rainallnight · 14/02/2023 13:13

Mine arrived today too! Applied 23 Jan but I had a delay in sending off the old one.

Mine took 5 days for a renewal passport last month.

great service.

TrashyPanda · 14/02/2023 13:16

I applied on Monday evening, sent old passport off Tuesday am, got new passport through the door on Friday.

So not even five days.

TheClitterati · 16/02/2023 00:37

Dds new passport arrived today - it took 15 days from application to receipt.

BashfulClam · 16/02/2023 00:46

Did them a month ago, husbands was done in 4 days (sent on Monday, back by Thursday). Mine took a week but I did have a name change so I got mine exactly a week after posting.

The check and send has always been a rip off. My photos cost £4 but if I was confident enough I could have tried doing them on my phone myself. The website is so easy to use. Then i sent them recorded delivery, came nowhere near £16 each. Next time try it yourself and save that money.

CrapBucket · 16/02/2023 01:05

Applied on 1 February to renew for DS. Was carefully timed to be done before the price went up, but after his 18th birthday, and to arrive in good time before his post A level holiday. Today they text to say it has now been printed so fingers crossed it should be here soon.
