To apply for the job directly, after recruitment consultant tip off?

A recruitment consultant approached me about a job on linkedin. I might be interested but the job is advertised on the company's website, and I'd rather apply direct than via a third party. I realise that means she may not get a commission, but presumably she has no exclusivity or it wouldn't be advertised. Aibu?

You're absolutely fine to apply on the companies website directly. They wouldn't have it available / advertised to do so if this wasn't allowed Grin

Also, it will end up saving the company money if they were to employ you, since they won't have to pay any commission to the recruitment consultant for sourcing you.

Good luck! X

Apply directly. Companies have to pay a small fortune to recruiters if their candidates get the job. In some industries that can defiantly put employers off some candidates if they have equally good ones that have come direct.

You would literally be saving the company 1000s

I honestly think it depends.

For example - today I was contacted by a recruiter who felt I was a perfect candidate for an IT Trainer role. When he emailed me the job spec I realised I had previously seen it advertised online and had not applied as it said, "Essential: experience in X industry". I do not have ANY experience in X industry. However I am highly qualified in training and IT with years of experience. I can therefore pick up new systems quickly (and have proven experience of doing this in industries that I had no prior experience in).

He said he felt the company was being "too niche" with their job advert and that I was a great match given my background. He is therefore pushing for them to give me an interview.

I feel like if I had simply applied directly they'd see I have zero experience in X industry and dismiss my application.

Is the recruitment consultant referenced in the advert on the company's website? Many of my clients advertise the roles they retain me for on their websites and via their socials. The ad will be published by them but directs candidates to me. If that is the case, nothing pisses off a client more than a candidate who feels they're too important to follow the instructions and bypass the consultant. Plus, if a consultant has been retained, they'll get paid even if you go direct so all you've done is piss people off and lost yourself the opportunity to have a valuable relationship with the Consultant.

However, if there is no consultant referenced on the employer's advert then the approach you've had will be from a cowboy agency who are not authorised to proactively recruit. If that's the case, avoid the agency and go direct.
