To hate my landlord?

I’m really sleep deprived and I’m starting to go a bit mad. The flat I’m in is terrible for traffic noise coming in from the windows. Landlord told me the property was double glazed, and it certainly isn’t.

Does anyone have any recommendations please for how I can fix this? Any practical tips for soundproofing the windows without doing anything permanent or damaging. And not too expensive please.

Thick curtains, an extra set of curtains, ear plugs (3M™ Earplugs 1100 Series), white noise machine.

How did you fail to notice if it was double glazed or not? Have they written anywhere it is?

Droppit · 10/02/2023 08:31

The easiest thing might be good quality ear plugs. Then start looking for a new flat. Do you still have a record of where (eg rental advert) it says the windows are double glazed? You might be able to use this to justify leaving early on a 6 or 12 month lease.

Did you not view the place?

Did you not view the place?

Even if she did, the landlord lied to her.

Or do you think that's ok?

Greenfairydust · 10/02/2023 08:37

I assume you viewed the place and could hear the traffic and saw the windows then?

I am not a fan of landlords in general but in this case surely you were able to check these things for yourself before signing up.

Stuffynosetime · 10/02/2023 08:38

Confusing post, didn’t you view. Whether it’s double glazed or not would be visible on viewing, and you’d hear the traffic noise.

Candletow · 10/02/2023 08:41

You can get double glazing that technically is but is pretty crap, can you not tell whether they are or not? If he lied then you could follow this up if it's on any sort of official asset list (I doubt it'd get anywhere though) but as long as they're legally compliant I can't imagine him changing all of the windows. I know not an easy solution but realistically aside from trying egg box cartons and other hacks look to move.

N1Co · 10/02/2023 08:43

Is it that the windows have gaps? If so you can get rolls of draft excluding foam that helps.

Applesandcarrots · 10/02/2023 08:46

Is it just the noise or are they genuinely single galzed (which you eould spot during viewing)?
Because i had double glazed and heard every fucking fart from the street. Former council house, eindows done on very cheap, it was like having single glazed.

Thick curtains, secondary glazing. You can get like magnetic ones or framed ones for quite a good price

It could’ve been a genuine mistake or mix up. The onus is on the tenant to view the property and, if something is clearly visible, they should notice it. That’s the law and that’s common sense too.

Your faith in landlords is touching.

Old / cheap / poorly fitting / broken double glazing can let as much noise in / heat out as single glazing but is still double glazing.
A quick look (post a photo if you wish) should determine one way or another.

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 10/02/2023 09:59

Double Glazing doesn't mean you'll get no noise.

you can buy stick on secondary glazing film, it's not expensive and you can buy insulating tape.

then earphones, white noise etc.

how long have you lived there??

It doesn’t even matter whether it was a genuine mistake or not. The onus is still on the OP.
